Chapter 21
After walking up and down, in and out of stores, we made our way to the sweetest place on earth. Or not so sweet since Kat finally decided that she wasn't going to beat around the bush anymore.
"So Jané told me that you disappeared for hours last night," she wasn't looking at me, we were walking into Sweets from Heaven, " where did you go?"
I turned to face her, she was smiling at me. The smile was hiding the curiosity but not well because it dipped slightly when she saw me pondering on my answer.
"I didn't wanna be around the couples, I don't particularly like cockblocking for my friends," I gave a faint smile to her, hoping she would ask no more.
It's not that I have anything to hide, but if she wanted to know about Sage, she should just ask. He's not my boyfriend, but he's not hers either, not anymore at least. According to what she told me at the Dance, she was over him.
Right?
"She also told me that Sage wasn't around either," she looked at me sternly, though her smile was unwavering.
"Oh, yeah I was with him for a while, " I shrugged in an attempt to ease her thoughts.
"You still haven't told me where you went?" her smile vanished as she chose the Jellybeans and laid them on the counter. The teller was telling her the amount they were and as she pulled her purse out, I decided to speak.
"Well, I took a walk around the lake and then Sage came, we were just talking," I smiled at the memory of his warmth around my bare shoulders. I love my idea of talking, don't you?
"About what?" she didn't miss a beat, counting the money in her hand she looked up at me, and she smiled. Her smile was nervous, did she really want to know?
"Just about...." The only part of our conversation that i remembered with clarity was not to reach her ears. How would she react if she found out that we basically spoke about whether all we had was friendship or not. She wouldn't take lightly to it thats for sure.
"About?" she pressed, still gazing at me, her smile slowly fading.
"Us."
Shit... I threw my hand over my mouth, still unbelieving my outburst.
She slammed the money on the counter, losing her cool momentarily. Pain shot through her eyes but vanished when she noticed my reaction. She had thought that she had me all figured out. Good things she's not blonde, or I'd be reduced to stereotyping.
Her gaze was back on me. " Sweet."
I could tell by her tone of voice that the situation was anything but "sweet".
"If it's any consolation, we were just talking about friendship." I tried to lighten the mood as we strolled out of the store.
"Don't sweat it," she said, as she chewed on her candy, "Jané says I should be over him by now, so you can have him."
She didn't sound so sure, she used Jané's opinion as a crutch, if she hadn't then I'm sure she would have fallen apart.
I don't think she's over him, let's test this.
"Okay, " I smirked, " so my cousin has a crush on him, you wouldn't mind if I set them up, would you?" I smiled the sweetest smile I could muster. Any sweeter and her face would decay at the sight.
She jumped at this," No!" she was trembling, trying but failing to calm herself. Talk about overdrive, " You can't!"
She was pouting, we're those tears lining her eyes?
