It had all happened so fast. Kid Flash had zoomed in front of them and informed them that Cyborg had succeeded in sabotaging the power amplifier. Then Cyborg himself had come with Shimmer in tow to confirm this. What was more, Wonder Girl had returned with Cheshire and Sportsmaster bound by her lasso.

Raven had also sensed that Red Hood was no longer in the base, and that Starfire and Nightwing had secured the control tower. All their objectives had been accomplished. So Raven had wondered why she still sensed one last looming threat hanging over them.

No sooner had she thought this, then the floor in the center of the courtyard had opened up. It had all happened before any of them knew what had happened. Once they saw what was going on, everyone jumped backward. And then the bomb had finally risen from the floor in front of them.

Cyborg dropped Shimmer and gaped at the colossal death machine. "Oracle, you getting the readings off this thing?"

"I am," said Oracle, "and scans are showing zero failsafes. There's no way to disarm or diffuse it. It's going off within minutes and take all of Jump City with it. I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do now."

"Dang," said Kid Flash in horror. "Just...dang."

"It's okay," said Beast Boy. "Cyborg can just upload the virus into it, right?"

"I can't," said Cyborg. "Not only did that take a lot of power, but that virus was designed specifically for the power amplifier. It's not going to work, this time."

Beast Boy turned to Wonder Girl. "Well, if that won't work you can just throw it into the water or into space."

Wonder Girl shook her head. "Even if I could lift it, throwing the bomb into the water would only create a tsunami which destroy the city, anyway. And there's no way it would make it into space."

Then all eyes turned to Raven. "Of course," said Beast Boy. "Why don't you just place a shield over it?"

"That won't work," said Raven. "I would have to maintain my focus on it, and with all that explosive force, I don't sense that happening. Even if I held it back for a while, most of the city would still be destroyed. In order for this to work, I would need..."

"A lot of kinetic energy," said Kid Flash. All eyes turned to him. "I can help with that. My powers are generated by the Speed Force. I can use it to create enough kinetic energy to absorb the effects of the bomb, and even if I don't get it all," his eyes were now fixed on Raven, "you'll be able hold the rest in your shield."

There was no need for further explanation. The others all knew what he was telling them. He would help Raven stop the bomb from destroying the city. In doing so, however, he would be giving up his own life."

"No way, man!" Cyborg exclaimed. "You can't do that!"

"Wally, no!" said Wonder Girl. "You're going to kill yourself! What about your scholarship? You're supposed to be going to college in the fall. Please don't throw your life away like this!"

Kid Flash just shook his head. "I'm sorry, Donna, but if I don't do this, all the people in this city will die." Wonder Girl was about to protest some more, but Kid Flash simply took a step back from her. "We always knew there might come a time when..."

"I don't care what you knew, man!" It was Beast Boy who had spoken this time. "We can't let you do this!"

That was when Beast Boy recoiled at the look Kid Flash gave him, and then he flinched by the serious, jokeless tone of voice he spoke in next. Not even Wonder Girl had heard him talk like this before.

"Listen, green bean! When I became Kid Flash, I always knew a time might come when I would go on a mission I wouldn't come back from! Well, now it's here! Yes, if I do this, I'll die! But if that means saving all of your lives, then that's all that matters to me!"
