June 22nd, 1966. Santa Monica
Lana and Jaime were seated on the terrace of the Café, facing the Santa Monica beach. Cigarettes in hand, their brunch was finished. The sun beams were strong but it wasn't too hot. The summer breeze came from the ocean. It was a beautiful day.
Jaime promised herself she would wait until after they were done eating to talk about the issue that was so obviously present in Lana's arm as bruises, and the dark thoughts that were bothering the older girl all morning.
Jaime stared in silence at her best friend for a while before saying ''Are you going to tell me about this guy you're seeing?''
''...It's a long story.'' Lana said looking down to her empty cup of coffee.

''There's enough time. I need to know why would you ever be with somebody that treats you like this.'' Jaime said adding more seriousness to her tone.
Lana kept on looking down, and jaime could see the struggle it would take for Lana to share this. It was probably not easy for her, but Jaime had it. She was done trying to act dumb and pretend Jim wasn't hurting Lana.
''You know you can talk to me. About anything.'' Jaime said.
''I should... probably start from the very beginning then.'' she said while taking a deep breath. ''After my boyfriend, K, was taken away to prison on a death row, I was completely lost, depressed and penniless... I gave up my life in New York and decided to go after the one thing that could make me happy again. My music. I went first to Las Vegas to try my luck, but the true dream was in California. I met a few men along the road who... helped me, until I finally made it to Los Angeles.'' she smiled a little embarrassed. ''I would be lying if I said I didn't spend time with them, but they were my only family, and they made me feel like I belonged somewhere again.'' Lana said with a little smile remembering the tough motorcycle guys she had met on the road a while ago.
''Then I met Jim, he was a completely different story. he genuinely swept me off my feet. I met him one night as I was premiering at the neptune, a small theater in Las Vegas. I sang three of my songs and the crowd was very nice, they all cheered me when I finished my set. Then Jim came backstage after the show and took me for dinner and drinks, He acted like a total gentleman. Then I started seeing him more and more.'' She continued.
''The more time passed, the more he was treating me like a princess. One day he took me to his mansion and told me he wanted me to live there. I had been looking for a place in L.A. for a while now, and everything was far too expensive for my budget, but I needed to be here in order to meet with producers and record labels, so I couldn't decline. He also introduced me to a lot of musicians. I couldn't say I was in love with him at that point but I did felt a strong attachment for him. But of course I didn't knew until later that he was a straight up addict with anger management issues, running a very dangerous business.''
