Chapter 20: Quiet
it's
much too quiet in here.
i wanna disappear.
i'm hearing myself thinking too clear
it's too quiet in here,
make it all go away.
why can't we break the silence, finally.
it's like you know where i'm going,
you follow me home but,
i never invite you inside.
They were....quiet. I couldn't even figure out how they were reacting, but there’s no way it’s good. Their faces showed no emotions whatsoever. The bullies were just sitting there staring at the screen, watching the video. There was one exception to the bullies though because there was one that was showing emotion; just one, but it is a start. One of the girls in the group seemed to be mesmerized by the screen while the others didn’t have a care in the world about it. The rest of the school was watching the videos, but the ones that were bullied were watching the bullies just like I was. I looked over towards the teachers and they were all crying. Their eyes never left the screen.
The video itself was beautiful. It turned out just like I wanted it to. Everyone separately told their stories and while they were explaining it the secret footage played of them being bullied. After the stories were all told, I was back on the screen and talked about how bad bullying was and that we are all people with personalities that a lot of people don't even know about. The next part of the video is what surprised me the most. That didn't go as planned. I got quiet. dead silent. David changed it. A black screen came up that read: It's Your Life cover by Kayla Dane.
David made me a music video. MUSIC VIDEO! I couldn't believe it. What I wanted to be showing everyone having fun turned into a music video. It went from me being on stage and singing and it would collage showing everyone having a good time. My music video was all about us having a good time and taking control of our lives. It was beautiful, but I couldn't believe it. The end of the video and my "music video" was my favorite. When I stopped singing it showed me staring at the camera and laughing with everyone else while I spoke against bullying.
"The key to getting back your life is not letting other people hurt you. Don't let them tear you down. Gain confidence and stand up for yourself. When that happens, bullies can't hurt you anymore."
I got completely distracted with the video but snapped out of it when the lights were turned back on. Everyone was looking at me, but I was still too shocked to say anything. The principal took over the microphone and was the first to break the silence.
"Bullying is a very serious problem, and especially in this school," she said, "I didn't know how to stop it, I'll admit it. I was a chicken and put it all on Kayla when I shouldn't have. In order to really stop this, we all have to be a part of it. We have to work together. From this day forward, any bullies who step forward and are willing to stop, won't be punished. Bullying is not to be tolerated anymore. Anyone seen bullying will be punished, but not by suspension. From now on they will have separate classes where they cannot bully. A class with only them and the teacher."
She looked over at me and I smiled. I held my hand out to her and she handed me the microphone, "We all know who the bullies are so I want all the other students to go back to their classes. The teachers can return also, obviously. I want the principal, the bullies, and the 13 who were bullied to stay."
Everyone started exiting the gym and it took a couple minutes before they were all gone. Dylan looked over at me and whispered in my ear if he wanted me to stay. Instead of answering I just held his hand. He smiled, and tightened his grip on my hand. The doors were closed again and the bullies were sitting in the front row of the bleachers. I still had the microphone.
"When the video was playing, I couldn't see emotion in any of your faces," I said towards the bullies, "but I know it had to of affected you somehow. When I ask you this next question, don't look towards each other for answers. For the first time in your life answer truthfully and what relates to you. If this video affected you, if you felt something while watching it, then step forward."
I watched all the bullies look at each other even though I told them not to.....except one. One was just looking at me. It was the girl in the group I noticed before. The leader of the bullies, Zane, had a sister and that was the one looking at me. Her name was Anastasia, but everyone in her group called her Annie. She started to get tears in her eyes...Zane noticed.
"Annie?! What the hell! What's wrong with you?!" he yelled.
That's when Anastasia slowly stepped forward. It was just a step, but that was enough. She was scared. I tried to soothe her because she can’t do this alone. She shouldn’t have to.
"It's okay," I said to her, "We are all here for you. I know he's your brother, but bullying is wrong. He can't hurt you anymore."
I saw a small smile come across her face and she stepped forward again, making Zane enraged.
"Annie get back here! I'm your brother, how can you betray me like this!" he yelled.
"Don't let him bring you down. You are your own person and you are strong," I said.
That's when everything took a very unfortunate turn. Anastasia turned to face Zane. She was mad. There was a lot more to this story than we knew.
"Zane, I've always been scared of you. I can't let that happen anymore. You can't boss me around anymore. Kayla is right. Didn't that video mean anything to you? Do you have any feelings at all?!" Anastasia yelled at him.
"How dare you," Zane said, "we're family and you've betrayed me."
None of us expected what happened next. Zane quickly drew a gun out of his back pocket and raised it at Anastasia. All of our eyes got really wide and we froze.
"That's right," he said, "now I'm in control. What do you have to say now?"
"Zane," the principal said, "it's okay..."
"Quiet!" he yelled. "Now I'm in control!"
Now we weren't only in a bully situation, but also a gun and hostage situation. Zane was very serious...and angry. Furious even. None of us knew if we were going to make it out. Dylan held my hand tighter. Scared for our lives.
