Some of you may know what the BA shuffle is, but for those that don't it is something firefighters and others do, you keep one hand on the wall use the other to swipe up and down and use your outer leg(one furthest from the wall) to sweep the floor. You use it for example when you are in a house of smoke and you can't see a thing.
This was what I spent my Monday night doing at fire cadets. Just me and Georgie, with our cadet leaders Stuart, Tony and of course Rozz! We went to Macclesfield fire station to use their smoke house. Basically they used a smoke machine to fill the house with smoke. You couldn't see your hand 5cm away from your face, let alone anything else. It was like being in a haunted house, dark and smoky.
As we did the BA shuffle around the house, we had to rescue casualties- these were stuffed things with weights in them. We found the dad on the table and then had to continue the BA shuffle up the stairs to find the final casualty a baby hidden in the wardrobe. We took the baby out of the house to then be told another casualty is also in there. This being our cadet leader Stuart. We went back in upstairs into another room.
Suddenly, I hit my hand on something. Stuarts helmet. 'I found the casualty' I shouted. And Stuart went in between me and Georgie whilst we carried on doing the BA shuffle back outside. We then decided it would be great to wear the BA masks! And try, that was amazing. Same procedure, however this time Georgie found the baby in a cabinet, I carried it as we went to look for the adult casualty which wen we did. I tripped and fell onto the casualty, squashing it. So if it wasn't dead before it was after me squashing it. Luckily it wasn't a real person. At that point Georgie had to be took out due to the smoke and so me and Stuart just stood there. Me holding a fake baby!
Eventually we all got outside and had a go of the rat run which is so cool. Luckily we had lights on when doing it. I went straight through and came out in the livingroom. Oops. I wasn't supposed to! I went back in to climb up to then come out in the room with the smoke machine where Tony and Stuart were. Georgie then followed.
Let's just say it was an amazing night. However I missed the other cadets. Such as Lois, Theo and yeah even Cole.. Things just weren't the same. Callum well he wasn't missed. Will be nice next Monday when we are all back. I will get to see everyone again!
