About 18 weeks!"You ready?" I called from the bathroom. I just finished putting on my shoes that went with my emerald green dress with lace shoulders. The now 10-minute task made Lacey run over to Donovan. She was petrified of the clicking heels.
The 6-foot tall toddler whined again into a pillow. "Baby, I don't want to go."
"Donovan, we already agreed to go to dinner."
"Not necessarily. You agreed to dinner. Meaning, I can stay at the house with Lace."
"You're already dressed. We're going." I tried my hardest to step without clicking my shoes as I went to my dresser to get some earrings and a necklace. The poor dog was quaking with fear.
"But my dad's very young girlfriend, also known as the girl who thought that you were suffering from alcohol abuse, is going to be there and I thought that we didn't like her."
"Your dad's really been looking forward to having a birthday dinner for me. We're going to his house, we're going to hope for take-out, and if not, we're going to try and eat their food. Now, get up. I didn't get all gorgeous for nothing."
"Then we can go out by ourselves on a date. I'll make the waiter or waitress or whatever they identify as bring you a big-ass cake. Please."
"Next time. Come on."
"Fine," he groaned, getting up and standing in from of me. "But only for you, okay?"
"Thank you, love."
He sighed a bit, but kissed me anyways. "Happy birthday."

"David and Monica!" Dana screamed as soon as she opened the door.
Don and I cringed in unison. "Donovan and Milly."
"Whatever. Happy birthday. How's my grandkid?"
"Still not yours," Donovan replied, pushing past her to get through the doorway. "Where's my dad?"
"Setting the table. We're having some garlic-y chicken stuff that he made."
I stepped into the house and the smell of garlic and lemon pepper filled my nose instantly. The scents that usually made my mouth water, made me gag and my stomach churn.
Without complaining though, I followed my boyfriend to the extravagant, only because his father struck it even richer from his newer job, dining room where we found his dad placing a dish of chicken in the middle of the table.
"Are you just going to stand there, son, or are you going to say hi to me?" he muttered, continuing to set the table.
Donovan chuckled. "Hey, dad."
"That's better," he said with a smile. Donovan has the same one. I never noticed how much he looks like his father. "And hello to you too, birthday girl."
"Hi, Mr. O'Keefe," I replied, smiling instead of gagging from the smell of the food.
"Y'know, it's about time you should start calling me Daniel."
I smiled shyly again, not knowing what to reply with.
"Dad, I somehow got her to stick around with me for this long. Don't scare her away with this 'you're-gonna-marry-my-son-and-eventually-call-me-Dad' stuff," D said.
