The elf sat alone in the corner of her dark cell, tears dripping down her red cheeks. The cell was cold and damp somehow. Mumbling came from beyond the wall, but she paid no attention to what was being said. She couldn't believe that all three of them had been captured. She couldn't believe that she was the only one to survive...
Her salty tears fell to the dirty, cold stone floor as she hugged her legs against her chest. Mia remembered every detail so clearly as she was forced to watch as her best friends were beheaded, making her gag. She would have joined them, but the emperor had other plans for her. Why couldn't he just kill her and give her peace with her friends in the afterlife? The elf couldn't help but feel at fault for their gruesome deaths.
It hurt even more knowing that she would be treated like a slave by that madman emperor. Forced to be like that of an antique doll for his subjects to look at in awe. Her swarming thoughts made her feel sick.

  "Drake... Grayson.... I'm so sorry!"

Her head shot up, watching with wide eyes as the cell door open, letting light pour into the room. She pushed her back against the wall, the chains on her wrist making noise as she did so. A man walked into her cell, tall but not nearly as tall as Drake was. He looked at her, taking a few steps towards her.
His lavender hair was covered by a hat with a penguin face on it. He had on purple and white armor with black clothing underneath. His right eye was an unordinary orange, while his left eye was a deep blue.

"Hey there, beautiful. The name's Luke." He said, twirling a golden key chain around on his finger.

He continued. "It's time to see the emperor again! Won't it be great to finally get out of this cell?"

The elf didn't reply, but only glared at him with her teary eyes. He closed the cell door, before walking even closer to her, the smile on his face fading. Mia kicked as she pressed her back against the wall, fearing that he would bring her to her new fate at the foot of the throne.

"Get away from me! I'd rather die than be forced to act like a doll!" She shouted, kicking even harder.

He lifted his finger, pressing it against his lips. "Shhh! I'm getting you out of here!"

Her eyes widened again as she was filled with disbelief. "Yeah right. Just take me up there and get everything over with. You just said that you were taking me!"

The assassin shook his head. "That was just a trick to fool the guards. I'm sorry about that. Please trust me."

Luke kneeled down in front of her, grabbing her wrist and unlocking the chains. He was bother to feel her arms trembling and covered with her own tears. She pulled her arms away from him forcefully, growling at him. Luke took in a deep breath and let it out through his mouth.

  "I....I couldn't save Grayson...or your hybrid friend..."

Mia looked back up, seeing tears beginning to roll down his cheeks. "... I couldn't save them... But I'm not going to fail you too."

Mia looked up at him with wide eyes, still bloodshot from crying. Even if this was some trick to get her hopes up, it was her best option to escape. She had to avenge Drake and Grayson.
She stood up, now free from her bounds. She looked into his different colored eyes, both his and hers filled with tears. Luke's back straightened as the elf lunged at him, her pale arms wrapping around his back. She held him tightly, placing her head on his shoulder as she cried.

  "Thank you. Thank you..."

His arms slowly wrapped around her waist, his cheeks growing a slightly darker shade of red. A tear fell from his blue eye, falling onto the stone floor. Their fingers dug into the others backs, both trying to find any sort of comfort in the loss of the ex-commander and the hybrid.
Luke finally pushed himself away from her, stepping back as she stood still. Her body was trembling, as she continued to gasp from her sorrow. Luke stepped to the door, opening it slightly to let torch light into the cell. He pushed the door completely open, peering from the doorframe to look at the desolate dungeon hallway.

He turned back to her, extending his hand to her. "The coast is clear. Let's get out of here." He wanted to smile, but he couldn't.

Slowly Mia reached out her arm to take his hand. Her lime green eyes looked into his mis-matched eyes. In a way, they reminded her of Drake's alluring different colored eyes. She missed him and Grayson so much. Would she ever see them again after death?
Her focus shifted back to Luke. The look in his eyes alone showed great resolute in saving her from this place. He knew what fate awaited her, and he didn't wish that fate upon any woman, especially a close friend of Grayson's. Something within Mia clung to his company. She trusted him.
Her hand gently grabbed his own gloved hand, her fingers wrapping around his. Finally, his smile was able to surface, spreading across his cheeks. His fingers gripped her soft hand tightly.

"I'll protect you. Don't be afraid. We will make it out of here, I promise."

A small grin appeared on the elf's face. She wiped the tears from her eyes as she hiccuped. "Okay. I trust you. What do I have to loose?"

Luke couldn't help but let out a small gasp. Once they escaped, who would she have to be there for her? With Drake and Grayson gone, did she have no one? As he looked down at her hand, regret filled him that he hadn't saved the others on time.
He shook his head, trying to focus on the task at hand. Luke nodded, before he started sprinting down the hall, pulling Mia behind him.
...

The elf and the ex-assassin stood at the top of the hill, the sun setting beyond the horizon. They had made it back to the edge of the badlands, only a few days after they had escaped. Luke refused to leave Mia's side, deciding to stay by her for as long as he could. She was too beautiful and too good of a person to be alone, especially after her heart was broken from the murder of the only people she trusted.
Even though it was only a few days, they had learned about each, becoming close friends. Luke looked at Mia, her hair flowing in the breeze, the light from the sunset making her look even more beautiful. He liked her as more than a friend, but he felt that it was too early to confess. Not only that, but she needed more time to move on from her friends.
He ripped his gaze from her, looking down at the same thing that her sight was locked onto. Two wooden crosses stuck up from the ground, in the memory and honor of the two who had lost their lives. If only he took action sooner... If only he had...
Luke's eyes widened, looking down to find Mia's hand wrapped around his own. A blush spread on his cheeks, and his heart pounded in his chest. He let out a sigh, trying not to focus on his nerves. He looked into her eyes, seeing tears welling up inside of them.

"Hey, don't cry. I'm sure that they're in a better place!" He tried to comfort her.

Her hand slipped from his, worrying Luke. She began to get closer, until her body pressed against his side. Her body was warm in the cold air. Her touch gave him comfort and for a moment, he forgot the remorse he felt.
He looked back down at the crosses, once again remembering his past with Grayson. He regretted a lot of things, mainly the night he betrayed him, and the day when Grayson and Drake needed him, and he was too late. Tears filled his eyes, slowly going down his pale cheeks.

"Luke?" Mia's voice took him back to the present.

He looked down at her, seeing more tears going down her face. "Thank you for being there for me. I miss them so much, but you're right. They're...in a better place. I'm sure of it!"

Luke lifted up his hand, using his thumb to wipe away her tears. He smiled at her, using his other arm to wipe away his own tears. She gave a weak grin, before resting her head on his shoulder. Slowly, he put his arm around her waist, surprised that she didn't react negatively to the move.
He pulled her close, resting his head on her's. The both closed their eyes, finding comfort in one another once more. He couldn't save them, but at least he saved her. With her around, he felt happy for the first time in so long, despite the circumstances in his old friend's death. They both needed to heal, but with each other, the open wound would stopped hurting sooner.
