I sat annoyed with my arms crossed over my chest with Wes sitting at the edge of my bed. "He's just being a father, don't worry about what he said," Wes tried to comfort me as he placed a hand over mine. I continued to chew on the inside of my lower lip, just staring into his eyes. I tried to find words but I was unsure of what to say. As crazy as this sounds, I began to think about what my father had told me just an hour before.
'Don't tell me I didn't warn you'; the words lingered in the back of my mind, creeping into my thoughts every so often. No, he wouldn't hurt me...would he?
"Oh my god I'm sorry I couldn't be here sooner," Drew jogged in with Alanna, rushing over towards me. They both leaned down, greeting me with hugs from both of them. "It's totally fine," I assured him, offering a smile. "How's she doing?," Alanna asked, referring to my unconscious sister beside me. I looked over at her before answering, "she's doing pretty well, according to the doctors. She should be up soon," I gave them both hopeful looks before Wes and Keaton both casually stepped in. "Hey bro," Wes quickly hugged Drew before Drew hugged Keaton. My mom was back at our house getting any essentials we would need, unsure of how much longer we'd be in the hospital. "How was your trip?," I asked Alanna, trying to spark a conversation to fill the awkward silence that was about to settle. She faced me with a slight smile, "it was really nice, we had a lot of fun." She sat down in a chair beside my bed as we continued to converse for a little while until I heard someone shifting behind me. I jolted my body so I could see my sister and she moved her head to face me, her eyes still closed. Keaton rushed over to her, kneeling beside her. I shuffled across my bed, getting as close to the edge as possible so I could grab her hand. "Emily?," I whispered, my voice cracking slightly. Her eyes slowly opened, squinting from the brightness of the hospital lights above her. The prominent bags underneath her eyes caused a shadow upon her cheeks and her eyes were bloodshot. She looked around for a few seconds before locking eyes with mine. The second she looked at me, my eyes began to water as I thought again that I was so stupid, and she didn't deserve this. "I'm so sorry," I cried, sniffling. She squeezed my hand in response, furrowing her eyebrows slightly. She looked at everyone crowding around her, scanning the small crowd before locking eyes with Keaton. I released her hand as she slowly lifted her hand to touch Keaton's cheek, and he immediately stood up and hugged her. "I'm so happy you're awake," he mumbled into her shoulder. "How long have I been sleeping? and what even happened?," she found her voice, it being very hoarse. "You got into a car accident with your sister and you've been out for about two days," Keaton explained and you could hear the relief in his voice. I felt Wes grab my hand and I looked up at him, smiling through my tears. I pulled him down to hug me as I cried silently in his shoulder. I sighed in relief, fortunate my sister was finally awake.
"Hi honey," my mom whispered, tears welling in her eyes as she hugged my sister. She just arrived back with three small bags of essentials, which were now placed on the floor as she rushed over happily to see my sister awake. "Hey mom," she answered with a smile, her voice still raspy as she placed her opened bottle of water back onto the counter. "How long have you been awake?," she asked her, instinctively grabbing Emily's hair as she pulled away. "About a half hour," she asked with a questioning tone, thinking about it to herself. "Okay, good. That's good," she laughed, relieved. She looked over to Drew and Alanna, offering a friendly smile to both of them. "Hello Mrs. Bailey," Drew greeted her, embracing her tightly. "You can call me Lucy," she corrected him casually with a smile as she then hugged Alanna.
My mom and Alanna began to talk about whatever as I looked over at my sister. "How're you feeling?," I asked her as she nodded, "I feel pretty good. Pretty refreshed," she laughed. "Well, you have been sleeping for two days," I pointed out as she laughed again, nodding in agreement, "yes I have." We got quiet for a moment before she asked, "how'd it happen? I don't really remember anything other than we were in the car driving back from the airport. That's it." I shrugged, "you didn't miss much. I don't really remember it either, it all happened so fast, but I think it was a head-on collision because I remember bright lights." She nodded slowly, "is the car pretty bad?" I shrugged again, "haven't seen it. But I bet it is," I said as I thought about what the car could possibly look like right now. She nodded again as Keaton walked over to us. "Hey babe, how're you feeling?," he rubbed her knee through the blanket. "I feel pretty good. Thank god," she laughed as he nodded, "yes, thank god. Thank god you're both still here," he looked back and forth between us both as I smiled at him. I looked back at Wes who was sitting with Drew and he seemed to be already looking at me. He offered me a half-smile before I gave one back.
I was studying the way he looked, noticing he looked unbelievably tired, noticeable lines under his eyes. Almost like how my sisters were earlier, but he had more of a stressed look hidden in his expression. He was slouched in his seat, his head leaning back against the back of the chair, one of his knees bouncing continuously. His hands were placed inside his front pockets as his mouth babbled words I couldn't hear from where I sat. He looked over at me again as I flicked my head, motioning for him to come over. He leaned forward and stared at me, clasping his hands together and digging his elbows into his parted knees. He stuck his tongue out at me as I furrowed my eyebrows, copying him. He crossed his eyes, forming a mad face at the same time, causing me to laugh at him. He chuckled slightly before standing from his chair and slowly making his way over.
