"ELEVEN WAKANDANS WERE AMONG THOSE KILLED DURING A CONFRONTATION BETWEEN THE AVENGERS AND A GROUP OF MERCENARIES IN LAGOS, NIGERIA, LAST MONTH. The traditionally reclusive Wakandans were on an outreach mission in Lagos when the attack occurred." The news channel Victoria and Steve were watching showed a clip of a press conference, "Our people's blood is spilled on foreign soil. Not only the cause of the actions are criminals, but by the indifference of those pledge to stop them. Victory at the expense of the innocent, is no victory at all."
The shot returned to the news anchor, "The Wakanda king went on to..." Steve turned off the monitor, placing the remote down next to the mug of coffee Victoria nursed. She sighed and shook her head sadly. This was not what she wanted- if she wanted to be on the news for murder she never would've left Hydra. Victoria felt Steve's chair spin as they heard the murmurs of another news channel from somewhere else in the Avengers compound.
"What legal authority does an enhanced individual like Wanda Maximoff have to operate in Nigeria? And not only Ms Maximoff, but also Victoria Stark? She returns out of no where, thirty two years after her disappearance and is immediately in the Avengers with skills more advanced than Ms Romanoff's? Something's not adding up here-" The guy on the TV began to laugh as Steve turned it off. Wanda sat on her bed, looking at the screen, her hand brought up to her mouth in thought. Steve leant against the door frame to her room, Victoria leaning against him with her arms wrapped around his waist.
"It's my fault." Wanda said.
"That's not true."
"Then turn the TV back on, they're being very specific." The Maximoff said bitterly. Victoria shook her head.
"They were talking about me too," Victoria said, stepping further into the room, her eyes grazing across the dresser next to the door where pictures of the Maximoff family sat. Victoria's heart ached over Pietro. "They're a step closer to figuring out who I am every day- it's not like everyone has my powers. They'll have me execu-" Steve cut her off before Victoria could say anything to upset the kid further.
"I should've grabbed that bomb as I'm the leader to deal with it. Rumlow said 'Bucky' and... All of a sudden, I was a 16 year old kid again in Brooklyn." Steve sat on the bed next to Wanda, Victoria sat on the floor in front of the two. "People died... It's on me." Steve bowed his head.
"It's on all of us." Victoria said softly, placing a hand on his knee to try and comfort him and Wanda by sharing the guilt rather than having it hang over one head.
"This job... We try to save as many people as we can. Sometimes that doesn't mean everybody, but, if we can't find a way to live with that... Next time... maybe nobody can be saved."
