I Wish....

Merry and Pippin and me were sitting quietly in Treebeards' branches. We had no idea where we were headed. I was slowly growing tired and sleepy and so was Merry and Pippin.

"How long have we been traveling?", complained Pippin.

"About 3 hours." groaned Merry. He yawned loudly.

"I can't take it anymore! When are we going to stop?" Pippin complained again.

I heard a low, booming voice in the distance. "Oh rowan mine I saw you shine upon a summer's day. Upon your head how golden-red the crown you bore aloft." sang Treebeard, in a low voice. "Such a beautiful verse."

"Is it much further?" asked Merry, who had almost fallen asleep.

"We've been traveling for so long." I stated. "Can we stop? Please, Treebeard?"

"Bru-ra-hroom. Don't be hasty. You might call it far perhaps. My home lies deep in the forest near the roots of the mountain. I told Gandalf I would keep you safe and, safe is where I'll keep you. I believe you will enjoy this next one. It is one of my own compositions. Right, ahem."

Treebeard gently picked us up from his branches and laid us onto the forest floor. The grass was soft, like a cotton blanket. He continued to sing.

"Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves and the dreams of trees unfold
When woodland halls are green and cool, and the wind is in the west
Come back to me. Come back to me, And say my land is best."

Merry and Pippin and me had fallen into a deep sleep. Merry slept on my right side and Pippin slept on my left. I was stuck right in between.

When I shut my eyes, I felt comfort and solace and peace. I felt like I was sleeping on a cloud.

"Oh, oh. Sleep little Shirelings." hushed Treebeard. "Heed no nightly noise. Sleep 'til morning light. I have business in the forest. There are many to call. Many that must come. The shadow lies on Fangorn. The withering of all woods is drawing near. The trees have grown wild and dangerous. Anger festers in their hearts. They will harm you if they can. There are too few of us now. Too few of us left to manage them."

A few hours after Treebeard had left, I woke up. Something was troubling me. I felt an emptiness inside my heart. I rubbed my tired eyes and looked over at Merry and Pippin. I let out a quiet sigh.

Merry heard me and he woke up. "Why aren't you sleeping, Brianna?" he asked me.

"I can't." I replied.

"I'm not used to sleeping outdoors. I wish that I was back home with Frodo. I wish that I was back in my own bed. My soft mattress....my feather pillow. I had a stuffed animal that I used to sleep with, but I lost him. His name was Sweet Pea. I wish I still had him with me."

Merry scratched at his head. "Hmm." he mumbled. He reached deep into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, fluffy object. "Is this what you're talking about?"

The object that he had in his hand was Sweet Pea. I gasped in excitement. Merry handed me over the stuffed goat and I squealed with joy.

"Oh, Sweet Pea. I'm so glad you're ok. Thank you, Merry. Thank..."

Merry placed a finger on his lips. "Shh, shh." he soothed. "Don't get too overexcited."

"How did you find him? I thought I lost him forever."

"You dropped him. You should be more careful with your things, alright? I think you should head back to sleep, m'dear. Goodnight."

"Alright, Merry. Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Bri."

As soon as I fell asleep, I felt someone's lips touch my forehead. They were Merry's.
