Gollum was hiding from the two hobbits.
He was too busy talking to himself."Master - Master looks after us. Master wouldn't hurt us." hissed Sméagol.
"Master betrayed us! Wicked, tricksy, false!" said Gollum. "We ought to ring his filthy little neck! Kill him! Kill him! Kill them both. Then we take the Precious and we be the master."
"But the fat hobbit. He knows." replied Sméagol. "Eyes always watching."
"Then we stabs them out." said Gollum. "Put out his eyses. And make him crawl."
"Yes! Yes! Yes!" said Sméagol, in delight.
"Kill them both." said Gollum.
"Yes! No. No."said Sméagol. "It's too risky, it's too risky."
"Sméagol!"Frodo called out again.
"We could let her do it." Gollum suggested.
"Yes. She could do it." replied Sméagol.
"Yes, Precious, she could. And then we takes it once they're dead."
"Once they are dead."
Gollum came out from behind the tree he was hiding behind and caught up with Frodo and Sam. "Come on, hobbits. Long ways to go yet. Sméagol will show you the way. Follow me."
In the distance, Mount Doom was standing underneath a sea of thick, dark clouds that were swirling in the sky. Frodo and Sam were almost close to the land of shadow. They were almost close to Mordor.
