Ponyboy's POV

Two-Bit and I walked down the street. Passing cars and the occasional person walking on the sidewalk. The air was cold causing my cheeks to turn red and sting. As we made our way to the Dingo, Two-Bit was rambling on about some girl that he had met at the Nightly Double the other night but I just tuned him out. I only focused on the sound of the wind blowing past my ears, blocking out the world. My head was still killing me but the cold air made it slightly more bearable. I couldn't help but notice the stares I got from the other people walking by. I guess it's understandable that having a bandage on your head and stitches in your arm is hard to go unnoticed but it was still bugging me.

As we entered the Dingo, I instantly tensed up. The place was filled with Socs. Of course, they were trying to cause trouble but Two-Bit didn't seem to notice. Why were the Socs here anyway? This was a greaser hangout and we weren't on their side of town. I mean, I know that they love to stir up commotion with us greasers but they never try to hang around our turf. I followed Two-Bit into a booth and tried to casually huddle into corner of the chair. I guess that I wasn't casual enough because Two-Bit gave me a weird look. " What are ya doin', kid?" he asked with an eyebrow raised.

I shrugged but then mumbled, " Nothin'. I just wanted to look outside." The answer seemed to satisfy Two-Bit because he dropped the subject and began to look around for a girl (He's always looking for a girl here. I mean come on, it's Two-Bit.)

Two-Bit ordered us drinks and we sat there for a minute in silence while I sipped on my coke. My leg was bouncing up and down uncontrollably as I looked around the restaurant. As, I scanned the Dingo, I recognized the same group of Socs that had jumped me the other day. I know that they hadn't forgotten about how I fought back and I'm guessing that they aren't too happy about that. Luckily, they didn't seem to notice I was here so I don't have to deal with them right now. "Hey Pone, I'm gonna' go hit up that broad over there," Two-Bit said while nodding towards a blond waitress who was standing behind the counter. She must have been new because Two-Bit had already flirted with just about every waitress here and I don't ever remember ever seeing her around here.

"Have fun," I mumbled as he walked over to her. He leaned against the side of the counter cooly, winked at me, and then started a conversation with her. I rolled my eyes in amusement. But, those few humorous moments quickly vanished when I saw that group of Socs start to walk over to me. Oh great. This is just what I need right now.

I stared them down, trying to hide the fear in my face. All four of them gathered in front of my booth with evil smirks on their faces. The Soc whose arm I cut was now wrapped in bandages. I might have tried to make fun of him but I obviously look worse than he does. "Hey there Greaser," The dark-haired Soc said.

"What do you want?" I asked quietly.

He smirked but then replied, "I just wanted to see ya all bruised up like this. Was it your brother? I wouldn't blame him. I would want to smack ya around too if I had to look after your sorry ass. It's too bad that I wasn't there to see it. Hell, I probably would have joined in. It's a shame, really." I was ready to rip his head off. How dare he accuse my brother of abusing me? I mean, I know that Darry has hit me before but, he would never do it to try to hurt me on purpose!

"Screw off," I muttered while trying to keep my voice as steady as possible.

"Oh, so the kid's got a mouth?" He laughed. "Watch yourself Grease, cause we'll be coming for ya." He and the other Socs snickered as they walked away. How could this guy make me so miserable when I don't even know his name?

I stood up, put some change on the table to pay for the drinks and made my way over to Two-Bit. He seemed to be hitting it off pretty well with that girl. I felt slightly guilty for interrupting but I couldn't bear to stay here any longer. "Two-Bit, let's go," I said with a serious tone. I guess he could tell that I wasn't fooling around because he didnt argue. He said goodbye to the waitress and then we left the Dingo.

"What happened back there kid? Why did ya want to leave so soon?" Two-Bit asked as we walked back to my house.

I shrugged. If I told Two-Bit the truth, he would definitely tell Darry and Sodapop. The last thing I need is a full on interrogation from my brothers. "I just didn't feel like staying. My head still hurts pretty bad and it was really loud in there," I explained. He nodded and we continued walking. I guess that it wasn't a complete lie. My head did really hurt.

When we finally made it to my house, I stepped inside and welcomed the warm living room. Two-Bit turned on the TV and then plopped down on the couch. I looked at the clock. It was already 2:45 PM. Darry and Soda would be home in a few hours. I knew that Darry was gonna' try to talk with me tonight so I was dreading his arrival. An idea then dawned on me. "I'm gonna go lie down for a bit," I stated. Two-Bit gave me a thumbs up without looking away from the screen and I headed off to my bedroom. I closed the door behind me and rushed over to my desk. I wrote a quick note to my brothers and put in on my bed where they would see it. I went over to my window and pushed it open. I quietly slipped out of my room and landed on the ground below me. I couldn't face my brothers right now. Not after what I had done. I'm sorry guys I thought as took a deep breath and ran down the street.
