Ariel Summers was sent down to Earth for one task: be a protector for someone. She meets the many faces of the Mystic Falls supernatural citizens (and humans) but finds none that she feels a very strong connection with.
The Mikaelson's then come back to town (or in other cases get un-daggered) and find their way into the life of Ariel. That's when Ariel meets the broken, and psycho, Mikaelson who she just so happens to feel that strong connection to.
