A few months later

PARIS, FRANCE was the fifth place checked off of Ariel Summer's list of places to go. She had already visited London, Tokyo, Sydney, and Brazil. Her next stop was New York City, and she was roaming the streets right now, looking for her hotel. Times Square was filled with hundreds of people going to work, and then they would go back to their families.

Ariel had no one.

Her and Matt would write, text, and call each other all the time, but she couldn't talk to anyone else from Mystic Falls. Klaus and Rebekah would try and contact her, but she would just ball her eyes out as he would come up to her mind.

Jeremy would text her, typing long paragraphs to explain how sorry he was. But, Ariel had enough of him; as she said before, he was dead to her.

As she walked across the street to her hotel, a man stood out to her in the crowd. Her brown eyes cast to see...Kol? Ariel went to walk towards him, but a swarm of people walked in front of her, and when they passed he was gone.

"Move it!" A man with a suit bumped into her shoulder and swiftly moved past her.

Ariel mumbled a 'sorry' before rushing to the hotel lobby. She got her room key and headed up to the twentieth floor so she could be all to herself. The room was a one bedroom with a kitchen and a balcony that looked over Times Square. She set her purse on the bathroom counter and turned the sink on. The cold water filled itself into her hands as she rubbed her face with it.

"Hello darling."

Ariel screamed and looked back to see Kol standing behind her. "Oh god I'm hallucinating him now."

Kol smirked and caressed her face. "I think feeling someone's touching isn't hallucinating someone."

The angel's heart warmed again for the first time in a while. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him for a second before hugging the dear life out of him.

"H–How are you here?" Ariel cried into his shoulder, still in shock she was able to touch him and feel him again.

"The Bennett witch opened the veil to the other side, so I'm here for a while," Kol began to explain. "But I'm trying my best to keep the veil open."

He continued, "Also...Jeremy Gilbert is dead. Oh what a joy it was to see him on the other side."

Ariel slowly realized that's why Jeremy stopped calling/texting her. A bit of relief that her boyfriend's murderer was dead, but also regret as he died knowing she hated her.

"Do whatever it takes to keep the other side open," Ariel placed her hands on his shoulders. "Come home, come back to me."

Kol smiled at her and nodded his head. "Whatever it takes, I'll come back to you. Keep exploring the world, love. I promise, when you're at one of the wonder's of the world, I'll be there."

Ariel nodded and kissed him one last time before feeling him disappear completely. She felt her hands touch air and the loneliness creep in again.
