I stared down the street. The rain bounced against the concrete, but none touched me. It was almost as if my body was waterproof. The water just rolled off of me.

That girl was nowhere to be found. That was fine, I knew she was still here. I always knew when anyone left the town or when they returned. She was still here.

My attention had been diverted. I had felt something. It was magic, there was no doubt about that, but it wasn't my magic. This magic felt like warm sunsets, or the euphoria you get when you smell amazing flowers.

Mine was different. Mine felt like thunderstorms and the grief after losing a loved one. This new magical presence was light magic.

There was the occasional dabbler in the art of magic, but none of them ever made it past level one. This magical presence felt like they were on my level.

I spun on my heel and hurried back to the house. I had to find them, they might have the other book! That book had the spell I needed for total control of this god forsaken town.

When I arrived back, Peter was sitting up in bed. His sweat had vanished, and he was less pale than earlier. When he saw me, he smiled, "Where'd ya go, Maxie?"

"I went to find the woman who hit you," I sat down in the armchair, "But, I got distracted."

He lifted an eyebrow, "With?"

"There's another magical presence here. It feels, good, almost like the exact opposite of me. They might be the thief who took the book from my family."

Peter's face brightened. I had told him all about the book, and the spell contained in it. Long ago, the book had been stolen from my family. Ever since it had been taken, each generation of my family has been determined to recover it.

"The book?" Peter asked, "The light magic book?"

I nodded, "It's in the town, I can feel it. We just have to find it, and the person who holds it."

Peter was grinning devilishly. I loved when he got that look. That meant he had a plan. Hopefully one I would enjoy.

"That means we need to lure them out into the open," Peter chuckled, "And good people always fight the bad."

"What're you getting at?"

He leaned forward a bit, "The mayor is throwing a costume party in three days. The entire town is invited."

"Except us," I pointed out."

"Right, but that's where the plan comes in," Peter continued, "Alice and The Hatter are invited. Knowing Alice, she's probably still down from the spell you put on her. The Hatter is a coot anyhow, so he'll be easy to take down. They're invited. If we lock them up, we can take their place. I'll be the Hatter, and you can be Alice."

"What even would that do? Do we crash the party?"

"If you would let me finish you would understand," Peter sighed, "Yes, we crash the party, by kidnapping the mayor's three little brats. We'll take them and demand some impossible price of ransom. The only way to rescue the kids from a witch and a warlock is to use magic, which..."

He trailed off, allowing me to pick up, "Only the one with the book has powerful enough magic."

Peter cheered, "Yes! It's the perfect plan! And, we get to kidnap Wendy in the process!"

I rolled my eyes. That was most likely what sprung this plan. Wendy, John, and Michael are the children of Mayor James Hook. How he got into power, I have no idea, but the citizens say he's the best mayor they've had. Personally, I think he sucks. He banished Peter and I to live in a shack in the woods.
