Fog

I look back out across the bay and see people fighting the sirens. Cade, Ash and Jake were taking on all seven. The gentle melody bursts through my thoughts. My feet suddenly feel lighter, as if I am flying. I feel an arm grab me but I twist it around and flip it over. The siren doesn't budge and yanks me into the ocean. Ice. My body was freezing cold, shivering and overcome with numbness as I was dragged through the water. The overcast and early morning didn't help my vision. Suddenly I can breathe again. I'm back on land. I see Cade and Ash. Sirens were attacking them from every angle, struggling to fight on land. I feel something cold and sharp dig into my neck. The song floods my hearing, but I could still see. I look at Ash, then Cade. Cade changes his expression once he realizes that I'm looking at him. He gives me a determined look, sending adrenaline through my veins. I grip my fingertips into the siren's inner forearm. It drops the blade and I catch it. I feel it cut me but I ignore the stinging. I stab the knife into the siren's neck and it falls to the floor.

"We got her back!" Cade yells.

I remember Chase on the other side all by himself. I go to jump in the water but I feel hands grab my waist.

"You're insane." Cade says quoting me.

I shove him off of me and grab his sword. I use it to stab the siren through its heart that was trying to attack us. Cade smirks at me. I pass him his sword and duck as a siren tries to grab me. As it tries to swing backwards, I grab it's arm and twist it out of the socket. I watch Cade's sword barely miss me and hit the siren's head. I watch Ash and Jake kill a couple more sirens. I counted seven dead. I look in the water and see another two. I load my bow and arrow but the song returns once again. I suddenly see Cade in front of me mouthing 'fight it'. I tensed up and kept thinking about Hazel. Where was she? I felt an anger so strong it overpowered the song. Hazel was in the bay somewhere, and if we didn't find her it could end horribly. I shot the arrows and they hit both the sirens. The song stopped completely and I jumped into the ocean. There was one more, because it has Hazel. One that I didn't count. I start splashing and screaming, trying to draw it out. Suddenly my senses dart into overdrive. I hear Chase's heart beat from across the bay, and I hear Hazel's breath. I glance across the entire bay, but I can't see anything. Then, I remember how in class, the teacher told us that sirens lived in underwater caves. I swam down the side of the rock, feeling for any crevice or crack. I kept swimming down, trying desperately to find something. Then, I felt a large hole. I propelled myself into it, praying it was the right one. The pressure was pounding on my brain. I was starting to run out of oxygen. I opened my eyes and saw a light. I swam quickly for it, and quietly brought my head up. It had a pool leading to the cave, and the ceiling was very tall. A river-like formation guided me deeper and deeper into the cave. I heard someone emerge from the same way I did and start gasping for oxygen. I grabbed them and covered their mouth. Of course it's Cade. I place my finger on my lips ordering silence. I grabbed his hand and lead him down the water formation. We crept into a smaller room and it was decorated with shells and blood stains. I held my breath as I crept into the room. There sat the siren with Hazel in it's grasp. I crept up behind it, refusing to make a sound. Then, Cade slipped and made a splash. Before I could grab a weapon, it grabbed me. Cade was there within a second. I escaped the siren's grasp and began hitting it.

"Get Hazel out of here!" I scream.

"What about you?" He asks picking up Hazel's frail body.

"You can't save everyone." I say quoting him.

He gave me a desperate look, then I teased, "plus apparently I can't die."

I kicked the Siren as its song sounded distant. I grab it's head and smash it into the rocks. The siren responds by slashing my face with its unusually long nails. I kneed it in it's chest and watched it's unconscious body fall onto the ground. I used the backup blade I kept in my shoe and slashed its neck. I was out of breath from the fight and waited a couple of minutes before swimming back to the surface. There was Jake, Ash, an unconscious Hazel and Cade. Where was Chase?
