"What?" I cry as fear pumps through me.
"Yeah. But the thing is, I didn't do it with any chant. I thought it and it happened." Cade said in utter distress.
Without another word, Hazel and I darted into the room. I flung the doors open and saw Principal Gary on the ground, unconscious. Hazel rushed over to his assistance as I pulled Cade away.
"Go report this to the board. Don't tell them anything about your...phenomenon." I order.
Cade turns to go but I grab his shirt. I'm not done yet.
"Cade, do you understand how impossible that is?" I question glancing back at the Principal.
"Yes." Cade simply responds staring at his shoes.
"If anyone finds out, you'll be sent away to a horrible, scary place." I warn.
"Okay, Sam. I get it. Nothing about the exorcism. Can I go now, mom?" He snapped strolling towards the door.
I rolled my eyes as he reached for the handle. Just before he could reach it, the door flung open. Ash darted in and nearly panicked.
"What happened?!" He yelled
"The Principal had a nice little ride on the back of a demon. Or is it the other way around?" Cade asks shrugging his shoulders giving me a smirk and disappearing through the door.
"Ash, calm down. Everything's okay." I say debating on whether or not I should mention Cade's ability.
Before I could make a decision, men who were all above six feet stormed the classroom with big guns and heavy gear. I grabbed Hazel and followed Ash out of the building. They did a full sweep of the entire classroom and came up with nothing. That's when they approached us.
"Did you children see what happened to the demon?" A voice bellowed.
"No, sir." I quickly lied.
"I'd expect you to give a full scale review and turn it in tomorrow. We are going to have to hunt this thing down." The man with a black mask covering everything but his chocolate brown eyes announced.
As he turned to walk away from us, Ash whispered, "you okay?"
I gave him a sharp, threatening look, then said, "I just got attacked by a demon that was possessing Principal Gary. What do you think?!"
"Point taken." He says back as we both watch the suspicious man walk away contently.
Once he is a fair distance away, Ash snaps, "spill it."
"There's nothing to spill." I hiss back.
"Don't make me torture it out of you." Ash warns stepping too close for comfort.
I lock my leg around his legs towards the kneecap, and shove him backwards. He flails his arms trying to grab something, but falls down in defeat. I spot Hazel trudging cautiously out of the art room and towards us. I sprint to her protection and dive behind her. Ash stops, watching Hazel's expression.
"What's wrong?" I ask facing her towards me.
"The demon got in somehow. He was after you, Sami. How are we supposed to keep you safe from a DEMON?!" Hazel cries falling hopelessly into Ash's arms.
"Haz, you shouldn't have a constant mindset of protecting me. After all I can't die, I won't turn, and my wounds heal impossibly quickly." I say gently.
"Come on. I'm going to take you back to your dorm. Sam, be back by 7." Ash orders coldly.
"You're not the boss of me." I say slipping into the small alleyway between English and Math classes for the older kids.
I look back to find Cade missing, as usual and Ash leading Hazel to the dorms. I turn back to run into an infuriated Chase. His arms are crossed tensely over his chest and his breaths are short and rocky.
"Calm down. We're all okay-" I start but he freaks out.
"I go back to my dorm for THIRTY MINUTES just to SLEEP! Then I'm woken up by Ash's text asking if he heard anything about YOUR demon attack. Two demons in one month?! Are you insane?" He demands tapping his foot violently.
"Chase calm down-" I say putting my hand on his arm, but he shakes it off and interrupts me.
"No. I will not. I can't leave you alone without something trying to kill you." Chase snaps.
"I'm okay, well thanks to Cade." I say gently looking back for him.
"What? Cade was there?" Chase asks suspiciously.
"Yeah, and if he wasn't I probably would've died." I hiss shoving past him.
Chase let me go as I jogged down to the pond. I sat on the sandy bank and let my mind settle on the fact I've been on the brink of death many times this past month. I'm used to the adrenaline of fighting vampires, but not twenty of them. I like the feeling of terminating evil, but not when the sirens are so powerful they can put an entire clan to rest. I've never faced a demon before now. I've seen videos, learned how to defend myself, but I've never actually come to terms with one in the real world. My body aches from lack of sleep and fear, my mind raced with outrageous thoughts, and my limbs were sore from all the combat that happened. The longer I sat on the bank, the heavier my eyelids became and the harder it became to keep myself alert. Before I knew it, I was crawling into a ball on the ground and slipping into a deep sleep.
...
"Get up, demon girl." A cocky voice said as I felt a light tap on my hip.
"Bite me." I say getting to my feet seeing Cade.
"Feisty." He returns stepping back, then adding, "you look horrible."
"You always were a ladies man." I say pushing past him and walking towards the dorms.
"That's not what I mean. You're face is covered in bruises. Why haven't you healed yet?" Cade asks catching up to me.
"What?" I ask in confusion.
"Your wounds should've healed over two hours ago." Cade explained.
"How do you know that?" I question suddenly suspicious.
"I'm just assuming.." Cade muttered looking away.
"You're a horrible liar." I say starring him down.
"I'm not lying." He snapped suddenly becoming angry.
"Yes you are." I bark back stepping closer.
"No. I'm. Not." He said slowly and clearly stepping closer to me.
"If you don't tell me RIGHT NOW, I'll-" I started but Cade interrupted me.
"You'll what? You'll hurt me? I may not be able to kill you, but you can feel pain." Cade hissed as his face crept inches away from mine.
"I have tricks too." I hissed backing up.
"So I've heard." Cade said turning away.
"Cade wait-" I try to be sincere, grabbing at his arm.
He immediately reversed my grip, freeing himself. Before I could react, he had me in a lock I've never seen before.
"Who are you?" I ask as he loosens his grip.
He just smiles. His face is inches from mine. I glance down at his lips as the thought of kissing him passed through my mind, but I quickly look away. What am I doing?
