I looked for Cade for hours after Hazel fell asleep. I finally found him near the gate the day he kissed me. He was drawing in the dirt. I approached him purposely making my steps loud so he'd be aware of my presence. He jerked his head around so quickly, it looked as if it would snap. I sat down showing my recessive nature, and he exhaled.
"Hey." I say gently.
"Go away." He ordered.
"Hey I'm not responsible for what happened in there." I defensively sighed.
He exhaled loudly, "I know. I'm sorry I didn't tell you before."
"I'm just confused." I confess.
"Why?" Cade asks facing me.
"Why not tell me until now?" I question.
"Because now the demons know and they're after you." Cade says gently.
"What are we going to do?" I say sighing deeply.
"I don't know." He says returning the defeated sigh.
I jumped as a voice rang from behind me, "Samantha Baker?"
"Yes, sir." I respond turning to face a tall man smothered in black.
"You're needed for a hunt." He says lacking emotion then speeds away.
"No." Cade says shooting to his feet.
"Cade.." I say.
"No. You can't go alone." Cade snaps.
"I accept." I say standing up straighter.
The man in black bolts away as Cade shoves past me.
"Cade, I can't deny a hunt." I call as he runs in the direction the man came.
I choose not to follow him. I don't know what he's about to do but I do know it's something I don't want to be involved in. I ran back to the dorms and found Hazel up and moving around.
"Hey, what's up?" Hazel asked.
"Wait, you're not coming?" I ask in confusion reading her calm expression.
"Where?" Hazel asks looking up from her book.
"The hunt. Cade didn't get asked either." I say gently.
At this comment, Hazel jumps to her feet and says, "you need to stay away from him."
"I can't." I say pointing to my hand.
On it was the burnt symbol representing Cade and my link. Something about it made me crave him.
"Whatever he did to you, we can reverse it. I'll find a way." Hazel vowed.
"Don't make promises you can't keep. Sam, come with me." Cade said appearing in the doorway.
"Is it too much to ask for a please?" I demand walking towards the door, but Hazel leaps in front of me.
"Stop, I'm not letting you go anywhere near him." Hazel said furiously.
"Okay, we're going to have to do this the hard way apparently." Cade replied stepping forward.
"This is my one and final warning." Hazel says as her hand lingers near the waistband of her pants.
"Oh, Hazel. If only you understood. That symbol on your friends hand? You hurt me, you hurt her. So if you were to shoot me, she wouldn't be shot but her brain would tell her body to respond to my pain. She'd feel the pain but never actually be hurt." Cade said shaking his head.
