CALEB

Finally, after four gruelling hours of being in the same position, asking the same question over and over again, and then another week of arguing about whom to choose, we were finally done. I threw the file onto the table and leaned back with a groan, my back protesting as I stretched out. Alexa was next to me, a grimace on her face.

“Never again,” she said, her eyes tired as she heaved a long sigh.

I nodded in agreement, and then looked over our final list of candidates. We had managed to minimize the number of populars that were in the committee to just two; one was my best friend, and the other was the least popular amongst the group.

Alexa peeked over my shoulder and we reviewed the candidates again.

Head of Decorating/ performance: Amber

Head of Music: Kayla

Head of F&B: Josh Ashford

Head of Performance: Riley Fox

Head of Venue: Alexa, Caleb

Head of Publicity: Ashley

“I can’t believe we had to sit through all those people and end up with five people. I like them, and I think they’ll make a great team,” Alexa muttered to herself, her hair falling into her face. Reaching up unconsciously, I tucked the stray hair behind her ear, letting my fingers linger longer than necessary. Alexa’s eyes locked with mine and I couldn’t help but think that she had beautiful eyes.

“I… uh… gotta go tell the people,” Alexa said quickly, breaking the spell.

It was almost as if she wanted to get away from me, and I wondered why.

Could it be because she thinks I'm like Quentin?  My subconscious muttered dryly.

Sure, I had a long record of girlfriends, but I never cheated. I shook my head, wondering why I was even trying to think so hard about us. I should just let things happen. I lifted my head in time to see Alexa waving goodbye as she went to inform the people we’d selected.

ALEXA

You can’t risk it again, that year was hell. Do you really want to go back to the way you were? After it took you so long to get to this point? My inner self barked harshly at me, sending me flashbacks of the horrors I’d been through while I was with Alexander.

I was so lost in thought that I didn’t realize I had reached the general office. By this time most of the students were at the café, and I knew it was a good time to make an announcement. I entered the office and greeted the old receptionist there. She was probably eighty, nearing ninety, but she had the warmest eyes and a heart-warming smile.

“Of course you can use it. Here, just press and hold while you read out the announcement,” she had said, gesturing to the red button on the microphone.

I pressed on the button and waited for the bell to go off.

“Hello Sierra Academy. I’m Alexa, head of the organising team for the Academy’s 20oth anniversary. After many promising candidates, we’ve decided the following. Decorating will go to Amber Jenkins; Music will be under Kayla Thorne; Josh Ashford will manage Food and Beverage; Riley will take performances; Ashley will be in charge of publicity and Caleb and I will be looking into venues. The selected students please meet us immediately in the interview room for our first meeting. Thank you,” I turned it off and heaved a sigh of relief.
