Before official confirmation of the council decision I was ordered to attend a lecture about the dangers of time line pollution....Marissa was conducting the meeting, we had an understanding between us at least.
"Whats your name?"
"Xanthia"
"Well Xanthia....what do you make of all I just said?"
"Ive been a controller of the space time directive for a long time....I know all about pollution...I know that a simple decision can change the flow of time"
"Can you give an example?"
"Looking into the history of Earth....perhaps going back in time and putting too much pepper on the burger that killed Elvis Presley?"
"I fail to see the relevance"
"He hated pepper.....thus it wouldn't have killed him"
"Yes I see......and from what I remember of that time period.....Elvis lookalikes did a roaring trade....it would be sad to lose their talents while the real one still lived"
"Precisely......so I know the dangers"
I walked with Marissa back into the console room when she was handed a piece of paper from a fellow council member....she read it and then looked up at me.
"Its been approved but there is a problem"
"Whats that?"
"It will be a one way trip"
"I feared as much"
"The Prime Directive specifically states that the course of a persons life cannot be altered"
"But wont my appearance inside this time frame create an instability?"
"No because you will be taking over from someone who exists in this time frame........we have limited information about this particular person and all practiced scenarios show no such pollution"
"I understand.....so once I arrive and become a part of it all....then removal will cause a stability"
"Yes....that is correct"
"So that must mean that something important will happen to me"
Marissa looked at me with saddened eyes.
"I have no idea what that can be.....but removal of yourself will in effect erase the future and none of us will ever have existed"
I knew enough about paradox to know that such a situation could not occur....but these were exceptional circumstances.....a breach into another reality had caused the impossible.
