Chapter 5

The last clump of trees stood before Hana and Maeko as they stalked towards the village.

Maeko peeked out of the trees, looking for anything, anyone. Nothing. Nothing but the sounds of fighting from the center of the small village.

Forgetting all caution, Maeko tore out of the trees, racing to the sounds, Hana sprinted after him, knowing that her dream was about to come true.

Maeko stopped as he came upon the scene before him. People of his kind sat huddled in a circle, surrounded by a dozen or so huge wolves. A few stalked around the edge, waiting for something to happen.

Hana came up behind him, her head bowed. "It wasn't a dream..." Maeko scowled and strode towards the group.

The wolves turned to him. One came foreward. The huge black wolf had scars everywhere and red eyes like drops of blood. It was clearly the Alpha.

It sneered as it looked over Maeko, lips curling to reveal deadly fangs. "And who might this little kitty be?"

"You have no idea what I can do. You may have teeth and claws, but I have speed and stealth. Try me mutt."

The wolf growled and lunged at Maeko. Jump as its claws reached him, Maeko slid under the wolf, morphing into a cougar. The Wolf reeled about, trying to regain balance. Maeko sat, flexing his claws. "You useless pest. I will destroy you and your revolting family!"

The wolf leapt and Maeko's throat, his eyes like boiling blood. Maeko morphed into a bobcat, slinking into the shadows. The wolf snarled, looking for him. Maeko leapt out at the beasts face, his claws gouging deep marks above the wolf's eyes.

The wolf howled in pain, blood running freely down his face. Maeko made attack after attack, slashing the wolf's flank and tearing his fur.

The wolf lay on the dirt, panting and bleeding heavily. Maeko sat a few feet away as a bobcat, licking blood of his paws. "Now you see mutt, I would love it if you left immediately."

The wolf stagered to his paws, his packmates rallied behind him. "Revenge is coming, little kitty, mark my words."

Suddenly, Hana walked in front of him. In wolf form, she was a magnificent white wolf with green eyes. Hana growled softly. "Get. Out." Maeko stood beside her.

The wolf laughed. "A mutt and a kitty! Oh how sweet, maybe I'll kill her first." Hana lunged, her claws slicing his face. The wolf fell to the dirt, his eye shredded by her sharp claws. Hana stood over him. "Go to hell you stupid dog."

The wolf pack picked up their leader and hauled him away, through the trees and disappearing into the forest gloom.

Hana and Maeko stood side by side, watching the sun set, sending fire over the sky. The village cowered behind them, afraid to go closer to the two heros. They could sense the two wild spirits merging into one deadly weapon that could destroy anything and everything....
