Rain still poured down the next morning when Evie opened her eyes. She hadn't even realized she'd fallen asleep. She had some how gotten to the fur bed and thought happily that Marilyn must have carried her there. Neither he or his friend were anywhere to be seen. She got up, stomach growling hungrily and decided to find Marilyn. The last thing she wanted to do was enter the room the woman was being held because she was almost positive she'd be dead by now but she went in anyways. As her eyes adjusted to the dark she saw the woman still alive but barely. One of her eyes were swollen almost shut and her face was cut and bleeding. "Oh no, what did he do?" Evie gasped as she ran to her side.
"He beat me. He's gonna kill me. Please... I need to get out of here I won't have any blood left." The woman choked out. Evie knelt down beside her.
"It's okay, he won't do it again." She said trying to convince herself as well as the woman.
"He will... Please... Help me." She whispered. Evie felt a tear roll down her cheek before someone grabbed her by the back of her hair twisting her around. She cried out looking up at Marilyn frightened.
"Don't talk to her, get out of here!" He growled. Evie shrunk back a little. The woman cried out and he kicked her in the ribs.
"Please stop. She didn't do anything!" Evie cried. He turned on her glaring coldly.
"I said stay out of here or I'll kill you both." His voice was like grating knives and it gave Evie chills.
"Just kill her get it over with!" She yelled, then clapped a hand over her mouth. How could she just say that. "I mean... Just let her go."
"I'm not letting anyone go. Especially you." He said, his voice cracking a little. Evie felt a lump grow in her throat as she stood up, putting her arms around him and burying her face in his chest.
"I'm not leaving you but this has to stop." She was surprised when he cradled her head against his chest and pulled her closer. Evie could hear the woman whimpering and it made her cry even more.
"Shut her up if you want her alive." Marilyn said, pulling away from her. He walked out leaving Evie alone with the woman.
"You need to shut up. I'm sorry but it's only gonna be worse the more you make a scene." The woman just glared coldly at Evie.
"I don't need your help. I'll get out of here one way or another and when I do... He's gonna be dead." She said. Her voice was so haunting in Evie's ears. She almost wished Marilyn would kill her just to make sure she didn't kill him first. Evie backed away quietly and left the room going back to the main cave room. Marilyn tossed some kind of cooked meat at her and she ate it hungrily.
"Mm thank you." She said through her full mouth. "I think you should kill her." Evie suggested quickly before she changed her mind. For the first time she saw a small smirk on Marilyn's face. She was slipping and she knew it. Slipping into the same murderous hole that he was in. "But after her... It has to stop." She said. His smirk disappeared.
"Do you want me to drain you of every last drop of your blood?" He asked.
"I do. If that's what it takes."
"Then I just might do that." He said glaring into her eyes. Evie shrunk back a little. She noticed that he winced a little when he moved and she knew it was his wound that was bothering him.
"Can I check that? I might be able to go home and get some medicine. Plus it would be a good idea for me to let my mom know I'm okay and get some information on what's going on." She said changing the subject as she moved closer to him. She took the bandage off and examined the inflamed wound. "Ouch this looks bad. At least the bullet seems to have gone through. What happened that night?" She asked.
"They tried to take you and kill me so I killed them all." He said matter of factly.
"Oh..." Evie felt a little sick but also relieved that he was able to take them all without getting majorly hurt. What am I thinking? She asked herself. Those were innocent people he killed that only wanted to save me. But those thoughts died immediately when she looked at Marilyn studying the scars on his hand. "Why do you do that?" Evie asked, gently tracing his scars with her finger.
"Go get that medicine." He said almost angrily.
"Okay." She stood up, looking at him with pity for a moment before walking outside. The rain poured, soaking her immediately. She slipped and slid down the hill through the mud, falling a few times as the rain ran into her eyes. Finally she made it home. Her mom met her at the door.
"Well hello Evie it's nice to see you again." She said looking like she wanted to strangle her right there. "Just for your information more people are turning up missing and things are getting worse. Not that you care. What's wrong with your face?" She asked grabbing Evie's chin and cranking her head to the side.
"Nothing. Really I just slipped on mud when I was coming down the hill and-"
"Honestly Evie I'm not trying to hurt you in any way but you're so stupid. I mean look at you you look like you just came from a swamp. You're wet, muddy, cold, losing weight and look like someone smacked you upside the head. I mean come on try to be civilized and normal for once in your life." She turned and stalked off. Evie had never been so mad in her life. Sudden thoughts of taking her mom to Marilyn fleeted through her mind but she pushed the thoughts away as quickly as they came. I'm turning into a monster, she thought bitterly. She snuck to the medicine cabinet taking some aspirin and antibiotic leftovers from when she had her wisdom teeth removed and shoved them all in her pocket before going to find her mom.
"Mom listen to me please. I know you think I'm crazy but I'm just scared okay? I don't know what's going on, I mean what even is going on?!" She almost yelled.
"Evie YOU listen to ME, people are being kidnapped like crazy, cops are disappearing, dogs too. The cops are losing hope now and the military is getting the word and are gonna have to check it out soon. I just suggest you quit hiding and stay here where I can keep you safe. Or I'm gonna be going up there myself." Her mom said all in one breath.
"Mom... He just-" Evie stopped realizing she almost gave him away. Her mom couldn't go up there she couldn't let that happen. "I mean I just find the woods peaceful and quiet and it's nice to get away from all of this and I want you know I'm safe okay?" Her mom rolled her eyes and walked out leaving Evie stranded. Her dad walked in staring at her quietly. "What?" Evie snapped.
"Your mothers worried about you. She thinks somethings going on and you have a part in it. Yeah you love the woods but you never loved them this much." He said kindly.
"Yeah well I've never had to deal with all this dad." She whispered. He patted her on the shoulder and walked out after her mom. At least her dad didn't seem upset. She snuck some bandages and peroxide from the medicine cabinet in the bathroom and hid them in the waistband of her pants. She thought about what else she may need to take back but it would be suspicious if she packed any more stuff into her pockets so she just started back outside.
As she walked out the back door she glanced up at the hill and saw him. His dark yet beautiful shape blending with the trees. He was watching her.
