Evie started feeling a lot better over the next few days until she was finally able to walk without feeling like she was gonna pass out. She knew she needed to get home quick and try to talk to her mom. Marilyn kept her well fed other then making her drink blood occasionally. She hated it but it seemed to make him happy. It was almost time. Almost time for her to end another life. She got sick at the thought of it but she had thought about it a lot while she was resting over the last week and had decided that it may be the only way to save Marilyn. It seemed pretty stupid. To kill a bunch of people to save one. But Evie was really finding herself coming to like Marilyn. If only she could fish his story out of him so she would know how to help. And this was the only way.
She felt numb that morning when she woke up. Given a simple cold glare from Marilyn and a pitiful look from his friend as she got dressed and made her way out of the cave. Today was the day. The day she would break her promise to herself and ruin another life. If her parents shut the flower shop down how would she get a willing attendee? There would be no customers. She decided to think about that after she talked with her mom. She walked swiftly down the dirt road and to the red gate at the bottom of the pasture. As she walked towards the house, her mom rushed out of the barn, wrapping Evie in a hug. "Evie, oh my gosh I thought you were dead!" She cried. Evie wanted to sink into her arms and cry but she had to stay strong and act like she'd just been staying in the woods like usual. "Were you really in the woods that long? It's been like almost two weeks!" Her mom said.
"Yeah I just... I like it up there... It's peaceful and all the commotion down here just..." Evie couldn't finish. She didn't have a good excuse but she'd have to try.
"Evie five more cops went missing. That makes six cops, one child and now six dogs. I suggest you quit going up there. I swear whoever this is is seriously skilled. The cops are giving up, they're scared and about to quit. The military is probably gonna be involved soon." The last sentence made Evie wanna die. How could she protect Marilyn from the military? It was impossible. She wanted to run and warn him now but it would be a while before the military was gonna be bothered by some murderer.
"What happened?" Evie asked.
"The cops got reinforcements and went into the woods and half of them and their dogs never came out. Just like the other cop they called and said they were okay but they weren't seen again." At her moms words it hit Evie about what had occurred while she was unconscious and why there was blood everywhere. He must have killed all of those cops that were missing. "Evie? Are you okay? You don't look like you feel too good." Her mom said, smoothing her hair out of her face.
"I'm... Im fine I just-" Evie didn't know what to say. She didn't know how she felt.
"Go inside and rest for a bit." Her mom said. Evie started to tell her mom that she was going back to the woods but she decided it was best to do what she said for now. She went to her room and sat down feeling dizzy. Her dog yipped, excited to see her but she couldn't stop thinking about what she would do next. She didn't want to rest. She couldn't. She had to get someone for Marilyn soon. She needed to hear his story so she would know what to do and how to help. She closed her eyes for a while before going back outside.
She saw a few customers by the shop and knew her parents had to keep it open for them. It would be easiest to get a child but she didn't see any. One lady was looking at the petting zoo sign and Evie took a deep breath before heading over to her. "Hi!" She said trying to be cheerful. "Would you like to see the baby goats?" Evie asked.
"Of course! My friend told me to come out here to see them." The woman said excitedly. Evie's stomach knotted up as she led the lady to the barn. As she played with the goats Evie asked her if she'd like to get some apples for them and the lady agreed. Evie led her through the fateful red gate and up the dirt road. "Well I didn't know the apple tree was thus far away. How much farther?" The woman asked. Evie pointed towards the cave. "Well I'm exhausted. Maybe I should go back." The woman laughed.
"No!" Evie shouted a little too nervously.
"Oh... Okay."
"I mean, no it's just a short ways, sorry!" Evie said quickly. They went to where the hidden cave entrance was and Evie stepped inside as the woman picked a few apples. "Marilyn." She choked out, tears in her eyes starting to build. He came out of the dark.
"It's story time." He said grimly as he went outside. Evie heard a muffled shriek and some struggling but soon he had the lady in the cave, hands tied and mouth bound. The lady looked at Evie in fright.
"I'm sor-" Marilyn smacked Evie quickly before she could say the rest. She held her hand to her cheek and let the stinging tears run down her face. Marilyn walked up to the woman, and in one hit she was unconscious. Evie closed her eyes as he started to suck the blood from her neck. She wondered why he did it so differently to her then he did Evie. With Evie it was so much more intimate. She wanted to hit herself for even thinking that. She opened her eyes a little and saw him finishing up with his "meal", licking the blood from his lips. He looked at her like he wanted to kill her and she shrunk back a little.
"Come here Evie." He growled like a dog. Her body felt like lead but she pulled herself up anyways. Once at his side he grabbed her hand pulling her down beside him. "Do it." He said pointing at the woman's neck which oozed blood.
"Marilyn no... I can't. Please don't make me." Evie felt nausea building in her stomach.
"Evie... Now." He said calmly. She shook her head no. He reached up, gently touching her face where he'd hit her. She felt comforted by his touch, some of the fear left but she refused to drink someone's blood like that. She reached up, laying her hand on his and it was almost as if he read her thoughts. He stood up moving the lady to a corner before sitting down across the cave from her. Evie sat down across from him ready to hear what he had to say. "You can ask me one thing." He growled. Evie thought quickly for a question that would answer a lot but most of her questions seemed to come in groups.
"Who are you?" She whispered.
