So I added the "Putting Holes in Happiness" video above ^^ because it's what inspired this whole book (which I started as just a short story that just went a lot farther then I expected) so watch it if you want. If this book was a movie then the music video would be the most perfect trailer so hopefully it will give you an idea of where my book came from :)

Evie woke up to a dull ache in the back of her head. She winced when she felt a knot that had come up and thought she must've hit the ground hard when she passed out. She sat up from the bed and thought Marilyn probably  carried her there again. He's probably sick of taking me to bed every time I pass out, she thought smiling to herself but her smile died on her lips when she remembered that Marilyn's friend was shot and probably dead. She looked to where a small fire blazed in the pit and could barely make out Marilyn's form hovering over his friend in silent sadness. She walked stiffly across the cave and sat down on the other side of the fire from them. Marilyn never looked up as he gently wrapped fresh bandages around his friends stomach.
"You're awake." He said lowly.
"Yeah. Did you sleep?" Evie asked. He never responded just laid his hand gently over his friends forehead. "Is he..." Evie couldn't even say it.
"Dead? Would you like him to be?" Marilyn asked sounding angry.
"No! Not at all! I just want to know if he's okay." Evie said feeling a knot growing in her throat.
"He woke up once but went back out." He answered shortly. Suddenly his friend opened his eyes glancing around frantically and Marilyn's face lit up a little making Evie's heart warm. "Go get some water." He said. Evie knew he just wanted time alone with his friend. There was a slight drizzle falling when she walked down to the creek, filling a small bucket Marilyn had given her to take back. She stood outside a minute listening to what Marilyn was saying to his friend. "You have to be okay... Please." He said, voice low. Evie felt a tear run down her cheek and swiped it away quickly before going in.
"Hi sweetheart." She whispered trying to keep her voice strong as she laid her hand on Marilyn's friends cheek. He had a fever that was probably off the scales. "Have you given him antibiotics?" Evie asked. Marilyn shook his head no so Evie gently put one of the tablets in his friends mouth and helped him sip some water. "You'll be okay." She said. The drizzle turned into a fine rain, pounding on the roof of the cave.
"Take some to the woman." Marilyn muttered, pointing to the back room of the cave. Evie picked up the bucket and carried it to the room. Once inside, her eyes adjusted to the light and Evie could hear frantic scuttling.
"Hey I brought you water." She said going to the woman's side and kneeling beside her. The woman's eyes were wide and her breathing was heavy. "What's wrong?" Evie asked. The woman didn't respond as she nervously drank the water. "Did he-" Evie's eyes suddenly caught on the pistol, nearly a foot away from the woman. "Wait a second... You were trying to get this weren't you?" Evie asked feeling rage build up inside her like none she'd ever felt. How has she even gotten the gun? "You were gonna get out of here and kill him weren't you?" She asked. The woman stared at her proudly.
"Yeah and it almost worked. I could've finally watched him die like he's done to so m-" Evie walked to her briskly and smacked her in the face as hard as she could.
"Don't you EVER and I mean EVER touch him do you hear me bitch!?" Evie yelled. Suddenly she clapped her hand over her mouth. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to-" but she stopped when she saw the hate in the woman's eyes when she glared at Evie.
"You're both gonna die." She whispered. Evie grabbed the pistol and rushed out before she got the urge to shoot the woman. Marilyn looked at her curious about what had just occurred.
"Here." She tossed him the gun. "Why isn't she dead?" Evie asked, voice full of anger. Marilyn smiled a little at her ferocity.
"Be patient girl." He said. Evie had never felt like she did now. Maybe that was what it was like when someone threatened someone you love. Wait what? Love? Evie thought quickly. Love? Did she actually love Marilyn? She also felt a little jealous that the woman was still there. Marilyn always killed quickly so why was she still alive? "Sit down." Marilyn ordered, "it's story time since you brought some-"
"No!" Evie cut him off. "I didn't bring the damn cop here okay?!" She shouted making Marilyn's friend whimper. "I'm sorry baby." Evie cried rushing forward to hold his hand. "I'm sorry Marilyn. I'm just... I didn't bring him and I don't know how to prove it other then to say that I won't listen to your story. That's against the rules right? I have to bring someone to get another part of the story. I didn't bring him here so he doesn't count." She explained. Marilyn smiled a little and Evie felt a tiny bit of joy take place of her anger.
"You didn't bring him did you?" He asked looking deep into her eyes.
"No. I promise you that." Evie looked down at his friend who seemed to be in a lot of pain. "I can't believe this." She said letting a few tears slide down her cheeks.
"He's not gonna die. He can't. We won't let that happen. YOU won't let that happen." Marilyn said grabbing Evie's hand. She looked down at his hand gripping hers and another wave of tears came spilling out. He needed her. She was the only thing that would save him and his friend. She decided in that moment she would do whatever it took to keep them alive.
"I'll do whatever it takes." She whispered. "Maybe I should go get more medicine from my house. I could get bottled water too and food if you want." She suggested.
"Blood. That's what he needs." He said simply. Evie didn't understand how that would help anything but she decided to get it for him anyways.
"Well I guess I could go find another victim." Evie sighed.
"Good girl." He said letting go of her hand. She smiled at him a little but couldn't help feeling disappointed in her lack of dread. She wasn't even that upset anymore about doing this. She slowly walked back down the hill on a thin path that was starting to wear down because of her many trips. The rain has stopped and left puddles and dark clouds hanging in the sky. She slipped many times before finally making it to the barn yard. Normally there weren't many customers that came on rainy days but today there were a few cars in the parking lot.
Her dad was no where to be seen and her mom was busy in the office so Evie crept into the house quickly and got as much medicine as she could carry without looking suspicious before going back outside. "Can I help you?" She asked a younger looking man who was looking at some petunias.
"Oh I'm just shopping for my wife today but thanks anyways!" He smiled kindly.
"You should come see our baby goats you could get some pictures to show your wife!" Evie suggested getting restless.
"Well I'm in a hurry but I guess you're right." She lead him to the barn. Sure enough the baby goats were out pouncing around on each other's backs and hopping around the yard like rabbits. "Wow they're really cute! My wife would love to see them!" He said smiling as they hooked up on the fence.
"Yeah and they really love apples too! Come with me and we can get some for you to feed them!" Evie said hoping it would work.
"Okay but let's make it quick." The man said. Evie led him into the pasture and started up the road. "It's really muddy I don't know if it's worth feeding the goats." He laughed.
"It's not much further." Evie said quietly feeling her heart start beating faster. That feeling of anxiety started to come back. She was grateful for that feeling. It made her feel like she was normal after all. Once they got to the bottom of the hill Evie pointed to the apple tree. "Right there. Come on we're almost there." He huffed in annoyance but followed her anyways. Suddenly Evie slipped and some of the medicine she was carrying slipped out from the waistband of her pants and fell to the ground.
                    "What's that?" He asked.
"Oh um... It's medicine for the mama goat. She had some trouble when she had the babies and it's just antibiotics." She lied. He seemed to believe her as he followed her to the top of the hill. Once at the top Evie whistled and Marilyn stepped out behind the man, hitting him on the back of the head and knocking him out. Evie watched as he carried him effortlessly into the cave. He laid him on the ground, cutting his throat as he began to drink the blood. Evie might be getting sensitized to the murders but it was still hard to see so much blood. She went to Marilyn's friends side and knelt down, kissing his forehead. "I know it hurts honey but it will be over soon."
She glanced over at Marilyn as he kept drinking the mans blood. When he finished he filled a cup and brought it over to them. Evie jumped a little when she felt his hand begin caressing the back of her head. "My good girl." He said lowly giving Evie chills. She smiled up at him. He handed her the cup and motioned that she give it to his friend. She cringed a little but did it anyways, helping him sip it like water. After he was done Evie moved to the other side of the fire as Marilyn sat down beside his friend, lifting his head onto his lap and caressing him like mother caresses her child. Evie watched in silent sadness. "Now it's story time."
