For seven days after the death of Marilyn's friend, everything was calm. There were no cops scouring the woods constantly, the rain still came down every day, dark clouds bathing the woods in their sadness. Evie sat, day in, day out in the cave, either beside the fire or on the furs, contemplating what would happen next. Marilyn hardly spoke during his time of mourning and Evie never left him to go home and check in with her parents. He rarely even came near Evie. She knew he spent most of his time alone somewhere within the cave, probably crying for his friend. Everyday, Evie took water to the woman and everyday she felt more and more hatred towards her. She always glared at Evie like she had a plan and couldn't wait to do something to Evie or Marilyn. Evie gathered apples from the trees to eat until she could go home again and get real food but the apples were starting to turn her stomach. I'll never eat another one in my life, she said smiling to herself.
She walked down to the creek to get water for the start of another day. The sun was peeking through the clouds slightly as the nighttime fog lifted from the hills. Evie knew it was early because it was still a little dark out. She filled the cup and made her way back to the cave. She wanted to let the woman die of dehydration but Marilyn needed her for something or he would've killed her already. Evie took a sip of the cool water as she entered the room. Her breath caught in her throat for a moment when she couldn't see the woman. "Um, lady where are you?" She questioned. The cup hit the floor, its contents spilling onto the cave floor when Evie's saw the empty chains laying on the ground. "Oh no... please don't let her get Marilyn." She prayed. She wanted to find him alive more then anything in the world. Surely one woman couldn't over take him. He was too strong. "Marilyn!" Evie yelled. She turned to go find him but found that he had been standing behind her the whole time. "Oh thank God!" Evie said stepping forward to put her arms around him. He grabbed her wrists, shoving her backwards. "Marilyn I-"
"You let her go? She was gone when I came here this morning. Don't act like you didn't do it I know you've been spending time with her." He said, his voice rusty from disuse.
"Please don't start this again, I've only been taking her water to keep her alive for YOU. I was bored what else could I do?" Evie cried. Marilyn shoved her back against the wall and suddenly slapped her hard across the face. Evie cried out and grabbed her face. "Stop! I didn't do it Marilyn!" He slapped her again and grabbed her hair, wrenching her to the ground. "Please don't!" Evie sobbed as he started kicking her in the ribs and head. She finally stopped fighting him and let him beat her. He was broken inside and now he was probably going to be found and Evie knew he was just scared. She knew there was no way to prove she didn't let the woman go. Her vision blurred as he straddled her and punched her arms and head. Finally he stopped and stood up, breathing hard. He stormed out of the cave room, leaving Evie, a sobbing mess in the floor.
She was in more pain then she'd ever felt before and knew he'd almost killed her. She couldn't take it anymore. He was going to kill her if she stayed. She decided to leave the cave and go home. For good. But how would she get there? She was beaten nearly to death, she couldn't just get up and walk out. And once she made it home what would her mom think? She drug herself to the bed and fell down pulling the furs over her. She was freezing but soaked with sweat. Suddenly, a blackness that she'd become all too familiar of enveloped her.
* * *Evie cracked her eyes open slowly. The slight smell of smoke filled her nose and she turned her head painfully to see the fire going but Marilyn was no where. How long had she been out? She didn't know. She tried to sit up but was so sore. Her bones creaked, stiff and exhausted like she'd slept for a million years. Once into a sitting position she tried calling for Marilyn but nothing came out. Her throat cracked in protest and need for water. He'd nearly choked the voice from her. She forced herself to stand up and move slowly across the cave. She pulled her jacket around her and stood in the open front of the cave. There was a heavy mist that whitened the air and it was even colder out today then it was yesterday or whenever since Evie couldn't remember how long she'd slept. Her breath was visible in the air as she turned to make sure Marilyn wasn't watching as she slowly left the cave.
This was it. This was the end of this crazy nightmare. She couldn't help but feel a little sad at having to leave him for good but she also felt relieved that it was finally over. She caught a glimpse of her cat meowing through the fog and looked up to see the bird, shivering on a branch, blood dripping from an injured wing...
