It was hours before Evie even had the strength to get up off the floor and she knew it would take weeks for her to make the cave look like nothing had ever happened. She stood up slowly trying to keep her breathing steady. Gently sitting Marilyn up, she put her arms under his and drug him to the fur bed. It took a while but she finally got him onto it and covered him up carefully before going to the center of the cave and starting a fire. She covered her face with her hands and struggled not to cry. How would she bury all those bodies and get the blood cleaned up without being caught?
She walked down to the creek and washed all the blood off of herself and her clothes before getting some to take back to the cave. The fresh air was heavenly compared to the stale metallic stench of the bloody cave. Evie nearly gagged when she stepped back inside. Her heart broke when she saw Marilyn's beaten face, still out cold on the bed. She brushed his hair out of his face and kissed him on the forehead before cleaning all the blood off of his body and washing his wounds.
"Please don't die on me..." she whispered, hot tears creeping down her face. "I love you Marilyn. I love you so much." She pressed her face against his. They had been through so much. There was no way she would lose him now. She wanted to lay down beside him and sleep for days but she couldn't let the bodies lay there. She stood up, soreness spreading through her whole body. Grabbing the shovel she went outside and started digging. The first few shovelfuls were simple and she angrily stabbed them into the ground. After a while she started to wear down but she kept digging. After hours she finally had to stop. She managed to drag five of the bodies out and bury them before the sky started getting dark.
She walked back into the cave, dragging the other sixteen bodies to the back room of the cave. There were a few apples left on the tree but Evie didn't feel like eating. Instead she went to check on Marilyn. He was still unconscious. "Please wake up." Evie begged. "I need you..." she whispered. She nestled against him and let exhaustion take over.

Upon opening her eyes, Evie slowly remembered all the things that had happened in the last few days. She sat up quickly, regretting it when her muscles ached all over. "Marilyn..." she whispered quietly, rubbing her eyes. No response. She looked down and closed her eyes, taking his hand in hers and squeezing it. He was going to starve if he didn't eat soon.
She stood up, grabbing her coat and pulling it around her tightly. Time to bury more bodies. She pulled the furs back over Marilyn's unconscious form and kissed his cheek before finding the shovel and going back outside to dig another hole.
She finally decided that digging a separate hole for each body was easier then trying to make one big enough for several. She finished burying six more bodies and covered them, wiping the sweat from her face. Spreading leaves over the graves so that they would be hard to identify, she made her way back to the cave. It was already afternoon and Evie's stomach ached with hunger. She couldn't stand the thought of eating more apples but there was no way she could go home and face her mother. She sighed and gathered a few apples and a bucket of water before going back to the cave.
She sat down on the bed next to Marilyn, feeling for a pulse. There was still a light one and I made Evie feel a little better. She grabbed his hand and looked at him, leaning gently over his face. "Hey... can you hear me?" She said watching her tears drop onto his face and roll of his cheeks. "Marilyn... I love you. Come back to me." She whispered, gently touching her lips to his. She jumped a little when she felt his hand slightly squeeze hers back and smiled through her blurry tears.
Grabbing one of the apples, she ate it slowly, nearly gagging with each bite. "I need you to come back and cook real food for me." She smiled as another tear slid down her cheek. She finished the apples and began tying one of her old shirts onto the end of a stick to make a mop. Pouring the bucket of water onto the floor she began to scrub up all the blood from the floor and walls and even from the ceiling since it wasn't too high.
It was dark by the time she finished. As she fell asleep she prayed that Marilyn would wake up soon before he starved to death. Her body ached even worse after the long day of cleaning and she felt filthy. She decided she would try to bathe in the creek the next day if she could. She gently laid her head on Marilyn's chest and fell asleep.
