It took Evie twice as long as it usually did to make it to the cave. She was completely drenched from the rain and was shaking from the cold. She was breathing hard and choking on her tears as she pulled herself into the cave. "Marilyn! Marilyn where are you?" She yelled above the thunder. She mopped her hair out of her eyes and looked around wildly for him. Finally she saw him standing in the shadows of the cave. "Thank God you're okay... Marilyn please listen to me!" She sobbed.
"Why did you come back?" He asked.
"They're coming. She found them and they're gonna kill you!" Evie cried. She didn't care if he hurt her any more as she moved closer, putting her face into his chest. "I will never, ever leave you again, I promise!" She said as she nuzzled against him. Suddenly Evie heard voices and dogs barking in the distance. She held her breath as fear completely enveloped her. "Please you have to hide!" Evie cried. Marilyn cradled her head close to his chest.
"Alright." He said pulling away from her. He knew this time he couldn't hide. He disappeared into the dark depths of the cave. Evie died her tears quickly and peeked out of the cave. The cops were headed right for it. There was at least twenty of them and a few dogs. Evie could also see someone else in front of the group and as they got closer she realized it was the woman who'd escaped. Evie's heart started pounding as she quickly tried to come up with a story. She sat down by the fire straightening her hair and clothes. The woman entered the cave sneering at Evie as she led the cops in.
"See there's the girl." She smiled evilly. The cops held their guns up at her cautiously.
"Who are you?" Evie asked her deciding to act surprised and pretend the woman was just some crazy lady who didn't know what she was talking about. One of the hounds barked at Evie.
"Oh you remember me well." Laughed the woman.
"Where's the man?" The cop asked.
"What man?" Evie asked standing up.
"You need to take us to him." The cop said.
"I have no clue what you're talking about." Evie cried.
"Oh so you're just a girl sitting in a cave who knows there's a killer loose and still stays in a place where she could be found?" The cop asked.
"I always come here! I always have ask my mother!" Evie yelled. Her heart pounded.
"This place looks pretty inhabited. You're not the only one living here." The cop said.
"I can assure you she's not." The woman smiled.
"Who are you lady? I don't know what you're doing but you're crazy!" Evie yelled.
"Search it." The cop jerked his gun towards the inside of the cave. Evie wanted to yell at them and tell them to leave but then they would know something was up. She sat down quietly by the fire again. The woman sat down beside her laying a hand on her back. Evie jerked away.
"This isn't over." The woman smiled.
"Oh yes it is." Evie whispered, glaring into her eyes before facing the fire again.
"OVER HERE!" One cop yelled. Evie stood up quickly and started for the back of the cave but the woman grabbed her pulling her back.
"GET OFF OF ME!" Evie screamed fighting until she broke away from her. The cops came in dragging Marilyn who was fighting the whole way. Evie started to run to him but another of the cops grabbed her wrist wrenching her away. "STOP PLEASE! PLEASE DONT HURT HIM!" Evie begged. One cop had Marilyn by the hair, wrenching him to the ground as the others beat and kicked him continuously. Evie screamed and writhed in the cops grip. She punched and twisted as she saw Marilyn starting to go limp on the floor. "STOP YOU'RE KILLING HIM!" Evie screamed so loud her voice started to go.
Tears streamed down her face. The cops were so busy beating Marilyn that none of them noticed Evie reach back and grab the machine gun from the cop that was restraining her. He grabbed her arm, fighting to get the gun back from her. Although he was stronger, Evie was quicker as she pulled it from his grasp, blindly shooting at him. He fell to the floor. The other cops turned from Marilyn and faced her. Before they had a chance to react, Evie held the trigger down moved the gun back and forth as she watched every one of the cops fall one by one and dogs too. Blood covered the walls and floor and even dripped from the ceiling. Ringing filled Evie's ears and her shoulder ached from the gun.
Everything seemed to move in slow motion and all the sounds seemed muffled. The woman was the only one left as she stared at Evie. Her eyes were so wide Evie wondered how they didn't pop out of her head. "Evie... I'm... I'm sorry! I really am! I shouldn't have brought them here!" The woman begged. Tears streamed down Evie's face but she had never been filled with more rage. She grabbed a knife from one of the cops bodies and walked slowly towards the woman.
"I said it was over. And it is." Evie said, trying to keep her voice strong. "If you hurt him you have to deal with me. You're really gonna wish you never left here in the first place." Evie paused as she passed Marilyn and knelt down to see if he was alive. His eyes were closed but Evie could feel a pulse. She stood back up and kept moving closer, making the woman back against the rock wall.
"Please don't hurt me. I was scared I had to get help. He was gonna kill again." The woman started crying.
"I can't let this go. Not what just happened to him." Evie sobbed.
"Someone like that just shouldn't be alive!" The woman cried back. Evie's vision went red at the comment and she lunged forward plunging the knife into the woman's stomach before pulling out and stabbing her again. The woman's mouth opened in surprise but she couldn't say anything as she grabbed the hilt of the knife looking at Evie wide eyed before sinking to the cave floor.
Evie felt sick as the woman choked on her own blood. She sat down holding her face in her hands as nausea flooded over her. The smell of blood made her even more sick as she vomited on the cave floor. She had never been more miserable in her life.
Marilyn was still knocked out as she made her way to him. She collapsed beside him and buried her face into him as she started sobbing again. Coldness crept into the cave again and a breeze blew the last flickering candle out leaving them in the dark.
