Chapter 17

Luke had been gone almost a week now and I was really missing him. I haven't heard from him since my usual morning text which is slightly unusual but he must be busy.
Jacob stayed over last night and it was good to have a gossip, just like a girls night in. Today I was planning to meet up with an old friend from college in town. As I was going to go upstairs to get ready Luke's mom called and asked if it was ok if she came over. I didn't want to come across as unwelcoming, after all she is my boyfriends mom. I text my friend Kayla and told her that I would meet her tomorrow afternoon.
"Hi mama"
"Hey Katie, I hope you don't mind me coming over today, I was in town and I thought you could use some company, you know with Luke being in New York 'n all"
I thought that was so sweet, we really get on well. "It's not a problem mama, so what would you like to do today"
"Well my granddaughter Kris is in town for a few days, I thought you would like to meet some more of Luke's family."
I had heard Luke talk about Kris, Jordan and Til, and how they had lost there mom and dad a few years back and that they lived with Le Claire until the girls went to college. Til still lives with her.
We arrived at the diner we had agreed to meet Kris at. I walked in with Le CLaire and Kris was already seated at the table,
"Hey meemaw, I have missed you" she said while giving her a hug.
"Hey baby girl, I missed you to. I would like you meet your Uncle Luke's girlfriend Katie"
She glared at me and said,
"I thought you were the maid, or did you gain yourself a meal ticket with Uncle Luke"
"Kris, hush your mouth girl, that is no way to speak to anyone."
I was in complete shock, she didn't know me from Adam, I can't stay here and listen to someone belittle me,
"I'm sorry mama but I think I will head home, I have some things I need to be doing"
Kris didn't even look bothered,
"Her name is Mrs Bryan to you"
What the hell, what was her problem,
"I will call you later Mrs Bryan"
"Katie please you don't need to leave, Kris apologise to Katie right now"
She just turned and looked at the window and didn't say anything. Le Claire put her hand on my shoulder, she could see that I was super upset. She gave me a hug and said,
"Don't worry sweetheart, you are family, so please call me mama, I am going to have some harsh words with this one, are you ok to be getting home."
I knew Le Claire meant every word she said but I was so upset. I just nodded my head and ran out before the tears started to run down my face.
