Chapter 14

Zann

 I was just sitting in class and copying notes when Claris ran up to Matthew's seat and sat next to him.

Just my luck that she was sitting next to him.

They started talking and as I passed by them to go out, I heard snatches of "You're so bad!" "She's not that," "Hey!" from both of them. I glanced at Matthew. He looked happy there. He caught my eye as I went out and I didn't look back.

I thought he really hated Claris, but it seemed that they had so much in common. They were like, "Hey, how's so and so..." and they'd start talking about the latest news about other people.

Matthew caught me during break.

"What's up?" he asked. "Nothing," I said, blowing him off. I just wasn't in the mood to talk to him after watching him and Claris talk about everything under the Sun. "What's wrong?" he tried again. "Nothing's wrong! I just don't wanna talk." I finished. Matthew shrugged and left me to be.

It hurt that he wouldn't try once more. If he had, maybe I would have opened up to him. But I just felt like there was too much competition from Claris. I walked over to the end of the corridor and looked down.

I really liked Matthew, I guess. He was really fun and I liked being with him. But sometimes, you just know, that maybe these things fall through.

Then again, maybe not.

I just wished I had the guts to tell Matthew I liked him, maybe even loved him, and I wanted to be with him as a friend and to support him everyday. I had told Delaney that, but I knew he wouldn't tell. For now, at least.

I wasn't even sure what Matthew would do. 

Di caught up to me.

"Hey, Zann. Let's go eat! I'm starving! Aren't you?" she asked as she dragged me away.

I smiled.

At least I didn't have to think about Matthew liking me.

Just some time with Di and Janice.
