"He's here!" Viktoria bursted into my room and shouted. "Dimka's here!"
"Dimitri's here?!?" I asked, frozen.
Ivan looked up to me. "Mama, who's Dimitri?"
"No one you need to worry about, hon." I replied. What a hypocrite. I was panicking. "Viktoria, help us hide!"
She shook her head. "You can't hide in here, Rose. You'll need to go somewhere else. Dimka'll be sure to be going all over the house. Queen Vasilisa is here as well. You can't avoid both of them."
"Well where can Ivan and I go?" I asked frantically.
"Can't you just tell them, Rose?" Viktoria pleaded. "I'm sure they will forgive you."
"NO!" I realized how harshly I was speaking. "No, Viktoria. I can't face them again."
Viktoria's face was full of compassion. "I understand. Go to Mark and Oksana's. They will take care of you, as they have did in the past."
"Thank you!" I replied, relief rushing through me. "Come on Ivan, we have to go."
"Where, Mama?"
"Just away from here."
"But—"
"No time for that. We have to go, now!"
I grabbed some clothing, shoved them into a bag, grabbed Ivan, and ran out the back door. I thought I was really fast, but apparently not fast enough. I heard a voice I had not heard in what felt like centuries, and I caught a glimpse of him. I thought he saw me, but there was no change in his expression. After one backwards glance and a quick goodbye to Viktoria, thank you, and telling her to pass those on to her family, I ran out and on the road to Mark and Oksana's house.
Ivan had fallen asleep on his piggy back ride and I admired the way he resembled Dimitri so much. But that brought so many questions to me. Had he really seen me? If he did, why didn't he do anything? Was it... Was it that he didn't love me anymore? No, I thought. It would be better for him—for the both of you if he didn't love you. That brought tears to my eyes, but what could I do? I abandoned him. I caused him more pain than he should have ever deserved. He should move on and not think about me ever again.
Lost in thought, I bumped into someone. "Sorry," I said, looking up into a familiar face.
"Rose? What are you doing here?" Mark asked.
I almost cried again. "Dimitri's—Dimitri's here. Can I please stay in your house until he leaves?"
He sighed. "I know you don't want to do this, but why don't you just go and talk to him again. Work things out. He was always very forgiving."
"Please, please, Mark. I—I just can't face him. Or Lissa."
He sighed again. "Queen Vasilisa is here too? You know what, just come on in."
"Thank you!" I said, unable to express how grateful I was.
"But, there's no guaranteeing that he might come here to visit." Mark warned.
"It's okay, it's not like I can stay at Olena's."
Mark opened the door. "Oksana? Rose is here."
Oksana's appeared. "Rose? Why are you here?" Taking one look at my face, she knew something was wrong. "What do you need?"
"Dimitri's here and I need a place to stay." A place to hide. Coward.
Oksana thankfully did not try to convince me to see him and led me into a guest room.
"It's small, for the two of you though. How old is Ivan already?"
"Nine." Nine years since I last saw him. Except that one breathtaking glimpse.
Oksana must have realized that I was lost in thought and left me in peace.
I lay Ivan down on the bed and curled up next to him, a tiny version of Dimitri. The last image in my mind was Dimitri, his soft hair, his dark brown eyes, and even his leather duster.
