Aunt Lucia made everyone some hot tea, and sent Tonya, Alexandra, Nina, and Bethany to their rooms. Delaney, Hunter, and I sat on the couch while the rest of the kids sat on the floor. We were all facing Aunt Lucia, who sat in a chair looking like she was about to read a book to kids at story time. Which, in a way it was like story time.
"Well I will start with why you left since your mother, apparently, hasn't told you yet," She sighed, "Long ago the king went to a physic to see who his new baby boy, the prince, would marry in the future. The physic told him that he would marry you, and that you would wield the power of all four of the elements. The king went home to confirm that you were born. What he didn't know was that Rachael was born, and that you split the elements."
"When you both became sixteen, and came of age to get married he sent for you. When he knocked on your door and your father told him about Rachael the king got extremely angry. He got so angry that he cast a spell that gave Rachael's powers too you, and when your father told him that he would never let you marry him because he had promised Tommy that he could marry you. The king called to his guards to go find Tommy, and kill him. Your father told him that he couldn't do that. The king laughed, and tried to enter the house. Your father pulled an arrow out of his sheath, and told him that if he took one more step he would kill him.
"The king ran into the woods, and your father chased after him. The king grabbed the arrow, and plunged it into his heart. I watched the whole thing from a few feet away. I ran to your house, and told your mother. She called Tommy, and told him to run to your house now. I left the house to go retrieve your father's body. I buried him right next to my husband in the Meadow of Peace. When I got back to your house your mother told me that she sent Tommy to Brooksen, Indiana. She said that you were moving there to protect both of you. Now you know how Rachael lost her powers and you got them, and why you guys moved away all those years ago."
I sat there my thoughts a roller coaster. My mother had told me that we moved because she no longer trusted the community to keep us safe, but now I know why we wouldn't be safe. I was angry that she didn't tell me the truth in the first place. I had spent a year not knowing a huge chunk of my life. I had trusted that my mother would tell me something that important. Then, I felt scared. There was someone out there that tried to force me into marriage. I am seventeen for crying out loud! I didn't plan on getting married until I was nineteen like my mother. I thought it was crazy that the community allowed people to marry at sixteen, and yet there was someone who wanted me to get married on my sixteenth birthday! Finally, there was that little bit of joy that Tommy was still alive. I didn't know what was going on when he left in the first place, and the fact that he was alive made me almost screaming with delight. I wandered where he was, and if I could contact him somehow.
When I didn't say anything for a while Delaney put her arms around me.
"Are you ok Sylvey?" She asked me using the old nickname that we had established when we were five. We wanted to be called something that would always remind us of each other; therefore, we combined our names.
"I honestly don't know Delvia." I gave her a small smile.
"It is a lot to take in sweetie," Aunt Lucia put her had on my knee, and gave me a sympathetic smile, " Why don't we get you home, and let you rest, but whatever you do don't let your mother know that you came back and know everything. I promised her that I would never tell you." She took my hand, and led me to the door. She called for the other kids to come say goodbye. After I put the cape on she led me to the portal.
"Come back soon ok. The portal will always be here for you. Keep the cape, and come in through the cellar whenever you come." She smiled, and gave me a big bear hug before she left.
