I sat down at my kitchen table and stared at the centrepiece. One lonely white candle, it's lonely white wick still covered in wax and unburnt. I had no use for candles, you know, with electricity and all.
It was after dinner. Soon it would be time for me to lay down in bed and not sleep. If I was unlucky I wouldn't sleep until morning.
Suddenly my phone beeped noisily, signalling that I had a text.
Cloe: hey Adam, are there any hotels in Owatonna?
Me: Yeah. Why?
Cloe: I was thinking of coming on a vacation to visit you.
Adam: it wouldn't be much of a vacation, it's always so cold here.
Cloe: oh well. So, would you mind if I came to visit you?
Adam: of course I wouldn't mind. But I couldn't let you stay in a hotel. You could stay at my place. I have like 7 spare rooms.
Cloe: well I wouldn't want to intrude.
Adam: don't start.
Cloe: no really.
Adam: shut up. When would you come?
Cloe. Tommorow.
Adam: are you sure your boss would be okay with that? You just took a few days off for the concert.
Cloe: he'll be fine with it.

As predicted, that night sleep eluded me.
I tossed and turned, foolishly hoping that that would make me less uncomfortable.
Finally I decided to get up.
I made my way down to my studio, sitting down at my desk chair.
I spun the chair around a few times (hey, it relaxes me!) and then booted up my computer.
Of course, I really had nothing to work on, so I was left staring at the computer screen.
Finally I turned off my computer, grabbed my car keys, and entered my mustang. I turned on the car, cranked up the heater (and the radio) and drove down the dark street.
