"Crap!" I pulled the burning chicken out of the oven, quickly throwing it in the sink and turning on the tap.
"What happened?" Adam came running into the room, looking worried. "I smelt smoke!"
"I burn the chicken," I said, swearing under my breath.
Adam sighed.
"Well, why don't we order pizza?"
"I guess we don't have a choice," I replied, picking up the phone off of it's cradle.
"Mommy?" I heard a voice from the doorway.
Our three year old daughter, Margo, was standing there dressed in her pyjamas and holding her dirty teddy bear, Mr.Green.
"Honey, what are you doing up?" I asked, turning off the sink tap and dialling the pizza restaurant number. "shouldn't you be napping?"
"I couldn't sweep," like most three year olds, she had trouble pronouncing her r's.
"Want daddy to sing you a lullaby?" I asked, biting my nail as the phone dialled.
"Yeah!" she said energetically.
"Okay, come on," Adam said shepherding her out of the room.
I smiled at the sight of Adam and Margo together, the tiny girl and that tall man.
"Hello, Jack's Pizza. What'll you be having?"
I ordered some pizza and then hung up the phone.
I started pouring pretzels into a bowl and put them on the table.
The rest of the band were coming over for dinner.
I could hear Adam singing faintly from the other room and I smiled again.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door and I jumped.
I went to go answer the door and the band stood on the other side.
"Hey Jasper," I smiled, gesturing for them to come in. "Breanne, Steve, Daniel,"
There was a chorus of hi's hey's and hello's.
"Where's Adam?" Daniel enquired, helping himself to the pretzels.
"And Margo?" Breanne added hopefully.
"Adam's singing to Margo, trying to get her down for a nap. Do you think insomnia's genetic?"
Breanne shook her head. "I'm pretty sure it's not,"
"I don't know," Jasper was still lingering by the doorway. "my grandma had brown hair, and so did my mom. Isn't that, like, the same thing?"
Everyone rolled their eyes.
Suddenly Adam walked into the room with Margo clinging to his neck.
"Couldn't get her down eh?" I sat down at the table.
"Nope," he smiled. "not even the magical daddy lullabies worked,"
"Bweanna!" Margo laughed, jumping from Adams arms into Breanna's waiting ones.
"How are you doing?" Breanna smiled at Margo.
Adam sat down on the couch.
I sat down beside him.
We heard a knock at the door.
I moved to get up, but Jasper leapt to his feet.
"I'll get it!" he shouted, running towards the door.
Soon he came back with two steaming pizzas.
He plopped them on the table.
"Mommy, I'm tired," Margo said, her eyes drooping.
"C'mon, honey. lets get you to bed,"
I grabbed her hand and pulled her to her room.
Adam followed me.
Soon we were tucking her into bed.
"G'night mommy," she yawned.
"G'night daddy,"
"Goodnight sweetie," we both said.
Sleep tight.
