Adam

After I let Jessica in, I made her some hot chocolate and she sat down on the couch.

"So," Cloe asked. "how do you two know each other?"

"Well," Jess flashed her perfect blinding smile at her, but her eyes weren't smiling. "Adam was sooo pathetic and lonely in high school that I took pity on him. We've been fast friends ever since!"

Cloe smiled and I frowned. I could feel my face heating up, although I wasn't exactly sure why.

"Oh!" Jessica said sharply after a moment of silence, making both Cloe and I jump.

"I almost forgot! The reason I dropped by is because I got you a belated birthday present. Because of my 8 month long spa vacation in Bermuda I missed your birthday,"

Cloe's eyebrows raised so high at the mention of Jessica's spa vacation that I was a little afraid they'd go flying off her head through the ceiling.

Jessica handed me a square present wrapped in blue shiny paper.

"Wow, thanks," I said. "you didn't have to do that!" I ripped the blue paper off hesitantly. If I knew Jess well enough a puppy could be hidden in the box.

Slipping the lid of a cardboard box I found beneath the paper off, I pulled out a red, faux leather jewellery box. I opened it and found a silver and black watch that looked like something a wealthy guy who owned five star hotels all over world and used wrinkled hundred dollar bills to scoop up dog poop would wear.

"Oh boy!" I said, horribly aware that my acting was probably not fooling anybody.

I slid it on, and my wrist almost dropped to the floor. It was so heavy!

"Well, do like like it?" Jess asked.

"Yeah!" My face started to hurt from being forced to smile.
