I ran to the end of the hall and wrapped Zoe in a hug.
"It's okay," I said, "What happened?"
"Who do I have to beat up?" Joe asked. I stifled a laugh- this was serious. He sat on the other side of her and rubbed her back. "What happened, Zoe?"
We gave her a couple minutes to steady her breathing and wipe her eyes. Joe pushed the hair out of her face and kept rubbing her back. She looked up slightly so that she was staring at the ground in front of her.
"We broke up." She whispered.
"What?" I asked.
"Alfie and I... We broke up." She raised her hands to her face and started crying again. I gasped and made eye contact with Joe. He was just as surprised as me. No one saw that coming.
"Hey, calm down," Joe whispered, "Calm down. Tell us what happened." Zoe sniffled and lowered her hands.
"He's been gone so much lately, I just wanted to talk to him about it." She trailed off. Joe said nothing and neither did I, so she continued. "He said if I can't trust him he doesn't want to be with me, even though it wasn't about trust at all I was just lonely... We got into an argument and he just said... He said..."
"What did he say?" I asked softly.
"He said we should start seeing other people." The tears began to well up in her eyes again, and I grabbed her hand.
"It's okay, maybe you're both just stressed out. Maybe if you tried to explain-"
"I did!" She cut me off, raising her voice. "I tried everything, I begged him not to leave, and he did anyway. He didn't even seem sad about it!" That doesn't sound like Alfie.
"Are you sure?" Joe asked. We were thinking the same thing.
"Well, I think so."
"You think?"
"Well we were at the bar and I was sad, so I might have had a few drinks..."
"Zoe!" Joe yelled. "Why did you do that?!" She buried her face in her hands again.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" She cried.
"No, it's okay, we can't change it now..." He sighed, "Maybe we should get Alfie out here to talk to you."
"No."
"Yes."
They were both silent, and I suddenly felt very awkward being there. Joe stared at her, and she looked down at the ground again.
"Fine..." She replied, "But if he comes back to the party without me, I was right."
"Alright," He agreed. He got up and extended his hand to help me do the same. I followed him silently down the hall and into the room again to find Alfie. We found him sitting alone on a barstool in the kitchen. Joe nodded to me, and I stayed where I was. Close enough to hear their conversation, but not close enough to seem like I was invading their privacy. Joe sat on the stool next to him. "Hey mate," he began. Alfie raised his head.
"What do you want?" He asked sadly. "Is she still mad at me?"
"I don't know," Joe said, "What even happened?"
"Well, she told me she hated that I was traveling so much." Alfie replied. "I totally get that, I do, but she travels more than I do! We can both deal with being away from each other sometimes. And when I told her that... She accused me of cheating on her."
"She what?"
"I know!"
"No, no, no. She what?" Joe ran his hand through his hair again, confused.
"She accused me of cheating on her. She said she couldn't trust someone she couldn't ever see."
"See, she told me you thought she didn't trust you."
"That's because she said she didn't." He explained.
"You guys need to talk this out while she's sober."
"She was drunk?"
"I think so." Joe answered, shaking his head.
"Where is she?" Alfie stood up.
"At the end of the hall," Joe said, "Go talk to her." He pushed Alfie towards the door and, after he'd left, made his way back over to me.
