Chapter 4

Draco carries me up the stairs and drops me on the bed as I lay deep in thought, sniffling every now and then. My hands are on my stomach, fingers clasped together. What am I going to do? Draco might not be able to escape his fate. Does he even really care for me? He's about to leave when I call his name. "Draco, where are you going?" I ask him. "I just thought you didnt want to talk," he answers. Before I can ask him to stay, he's clutching his arm in pain. "What is it?" I worriedly start to get up. "Nothing. The dark lord wants to talk to all of us. I have to go," He grimaces. "Oh. Are you sure its just a meeting?" I ask him. What was wrong with me. I don't care about Draco. I can't. "It should be. Just... Stay here and I'll be back this afternoon," he says, opening the door. "Alright," I answer. With that, Draco scurries downstairs leaving me alone in the doorway. I decide to stop worrying and go to the library instead. I hunt down a few books on Veela genes and horcruxes, then sit down at a table by the window. Snow has fallen, the windows have frost on them. Its my favorite time of the year. Of course it would be more favorable if the dark lord wasn't trying to ruin the lives of every witch and wizard alive. I quickly busy my brain by opening the first book I pulled. "Veelas: a threat, or a blessing?" I'll admit the title is quite stupid, but I know the author, so naturally I had to pick it up. Page 32 sparks the most interest. "Veela are highly protective of their mates. Never get caught in a life or death situation with a Veela that you care for, because almost every time they will give their lives to protect their mate. Also, Veela have no control whatsoever of their mates. It could be any person in the world. And a fair warning to all and any: a Veela can and will do anything to-" I'm interupted by Ron. "Hermione," I hear from across the room. When I look up Harry and Ron are walking my way. I quickly shove the book to the side and replace it with "Dark Magic and what to beware of." They each grab a chair and sit with me. "How was your morning? We didnt see you at breakfast," Harry asks. "Oh. Sorry I forgot. I guess I just got lost in this book," I say, holding it up to show the two of them. "Brilliant. Did you find anything?" Harry asks, pulling something from his pocket. "No. Just the same old 'split the soul'," I lie. Harry slides me a bag with a cinnimon roll inside. "You can have that if you want," Harry says. "Thank you," I say. I am really hungry after all thats happened this morning. "So what about you. Anything?" I ask, taking a small bite of the roll. "I was thinking, horcruxes could be anything, right? The first one was the diary, which is something that meant a lot to Tom. So, the rest must be things that mean something to him. I think we need to go to the foster home that Tom was put in as a child. Maybe it will lead us somewhere," Harry explains. "No. Tom was put in plenty of foster homes. Would they really mean that much to him?" I say. "What about Gringotts?" Ron says after being strangely silent for a while. "Maybe he put some of them in a safe there," Ron says. "Its possible. But, I dont know. Thats seems pretty obvious," I frown. "Goodmorning Ms. Granger," Professor Mcgonagall says from behind me. I jump a little and turn. "Good morning," I say, trying not to sound nervous. "What book are you indulging in today?" She asks suspiciously. I quickly pick up the book I dropped and show it to her. " I'm actually studying Veelas. Very interesting topic. Its sort of a private project i'm working on," I answer. "Veelas. Why on earth would you choose Veelas?" She asks. She can sense I'm up to something. "I've just always wondered about them. Behavior, Emotion, things like that," I say. "Yes. Well, dont let me interupt," she smiles. She walks away and we all sigh in relief. "Nice save," Ron smiles. "Always the tone of surprise," I smile back. "Here. Just take this book. I have to go find something," I say, handing the dark magic book to him and standing up. I walk through the hallways of Howwarts until I reach the Astronomy Tower, one of the highest points in Hogwarts. Its airy and free up here, I feel like all my troubles are being whisked away with the wind. Truth is, I didnt have to find anything except my strength.
