"No No No!!! Its Right lead, Canter to B, Side step to K, trot to A, and a Left lead to J." I yelled. I was teaching a girl that was about 17 to do dressage for a beginners competition. She was doing okay until her horse, Oreo Milkshake, decided to pull a few rears.
I was doing a brief training session while on my half hour break from pair jumping practice. Oreo was a black and white pinto stallion. He had a black mane and tail. He was about 17.3hh.
She dropped her reigns and took off her helmet. She looked at me. "He just won't listen! I've tried new tack, new trainers, new bits, loosening my reign hold,and even giving him a break. nothing works!"
"Wait, did you say loosening your reign hold?" I asked
"Yes."
"Don't do that. it makes him think that he's in charge. Also, when your doing your right lead, dig your left heel into his side. when your doing your left lead, dig your right heel into his right side." I said.
She tried the course again. "It worked!" She gave Oreo a pat on the neck. "Thanks." she dismounted and led him to the barn.
I walked over to the barn and grabbed Dancer from her stall. I mounted her and trotted out of the stable. I ran the course twice and cooled out Dancer. I untacked her and let her out into the mares pasture. Tami, the girl I had been teaching shut the gate to the stallions pasture and walked over to me. "Thanks for the lesson." she smiled.
"Your welcome." I answered.
"I also wanted to say, You and your horse, were amazing!"
"Thanks. Um.. I have to go. Hey, why don't you come to the competition tomorrow? you can watch us if you want." I said.
"Yeah. See you tomorrow." she said
I walked to the barn and fed and watered all the horses. Then I went inside and got ready for bed after eating dinner. Tired, I laid down and closed my eyes. Listening to my music, I fell asleep quickly. I was so excited for the competition tomorrow, I couldn't help but smile.
