I stopped by the creek and let Dancer get a drink. We each pulled out our water bottles. When the horses lifted their heads, we put them into a walk and began our climb up to a secret camping spot we've had for a few years. I let Dancer set the pace for this ride. The whole time, no one has said a word. Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I lifted it out. mom. I declined the call and kept riding. I didn't want to talk to her.

Marie pulled up next to me. She reached over and patted Dancers neck. Carmel kept perfect pace with her. My phone began to vibrate again. A text from Jordan.

*Hey. What's wrong? your mom just ran in here asking if any of us knew where you were going. I'm worried about you. If you can, call please?*

I read it once and decided to call. After all, no harm done. She's my best friend. I punched in her number and lifted the phone to my ear. I dropped back and brought up the rear. The phone rang twice and then she picked up. "Hey! What's wrong? where are you? are you okay?"

I laughed silently. "Yeah we're fine. As for what's wrong, we found out we were adopted and then our 'birth mom' decided to pay us a visit unannounced, walked in on Tyler and I kissing in the tack room and ruined that, then, went and found Marie and said or did something to make her bawl her eyes out and come to Tyler and I. So that's what's wrong. I'm over it. On top of it all, we haven't heard from my dad in weeks!" I'm on the brink of tears by now.

"Oh," she paused. "where are you. I'm by the creek on Blossom."

"We are headed to our camping spot. Just up the 'mountain'. We will stop and eat so you can catch up."

"Okay. be there soon."

"Bye"

We hung up. I trotted up to Tyler in the front. "Jordan's about 15 minutes behind us. I want to stop and wait and I'm sure that we're all hungry, so let's rest and eat." I suggested.

"Okay." We all pulled to a halt and slipped off our horses. I pulled out food, water, and a horse blanket. We were just packing up when Jordan showed up.

"Well howdy." She smiled.

"Hi." I gave her a faint smile back.

I swung into the saddle and took up my reigns. "Lets go. We're burning daylight." I said, loud enough for all of us to hear.

We all picked up a nice working trot. Within an hour, we were there. My phone buzzed. A text from mom.

*Hurry. come home. It's dad.*

My breath caught in my throat. My eyes burned with tears. "Guys." I managed to croak out. "Marie and I have to go home. Fast. It's our dad." I let one tear fall. it slides down and stains a rock for a split second before the sweltering heat evaporates it into nothing. We all turn back and begin galloping as fast as we can. In a half an hour, we are at the barn. Tyler and Jordan take our horses and we run inside. My mom is asleep I the couch. A colored paper catches my eye. It's a pink so dark that its almost red. With dread, I flip it over. I began to read it.

"To the Anderson family, We regret to inform you that your husband and father has been..."
