As usual, I was the last one to wake up. But mostly, it was the smell of food that got me up.
' Hey' I say as I take a seat beside Ava.
No one says anything. I look at the others closely. They both clock their heads to the side, as if listening for something.
I listen closely and sure enough, I hear it. There are heavy footsteps thudding through the clearing.
And there are two dark guards. Standing right there.
I stifle a scream. God knows how torturous these guys can get, judging by their cruel sneers.' Looks like we got the cats in the bag' says the taller one. The other one guffaws as if its some funny joke.
'We were so stupid to just go out like this' I curse myself mentally.
' Listen here, we got direct orders to take you to the king for a public execution, but if you refuse to listen, we can do the dirty work right here' says one.
They mainly have their attention on me and Jason, not Ava so she seizes her chance by transforming into a bird. She swoops into the air and begins pecking at their heads.
They swipe at the air blindly while me and Jason pack up our things and make our get- away.
They don't get fooled that easily. The shorter one takes aim and shoots an arrow at Ava. The arrow hits her wing and she falls to the ground with a piercing screech.
' Ava!' I scream, but there's no time to worry, the guards are getting closer by the second.
Jason charges and knocks one to the ground, while punching him in the nose repeatedly. I wince at the violence but make myself strong on the inside, and decide to take on the other one.
I over estimate my strengths. I manage to land a harsh blow to his stomach, but he grabs my arm and pins me to the ground. He then grabs a dagger from his belt and brings it closer and closer.
I close my eyes and concentrate so hard, that pain sears through my mind and sweat runs down my face.
I open my eyes and the dark guard drops to the floor. I blink a couple of times, confused. So I get up and inspect the guard.
He's......snoring. Then I understand. I was the one who put him to sleep. I used my powers.
I then come back to the present.
Jason seems to have knocked the tall guard unconscious and is now kneeling near Ava.
I take a deep breath to calm my worrying nerves and run over to help.
Ava lays there gasping, her breaths shallow and a pool of blood surrounds her.
I cringe and take deep breaths, for the millionth time.
' Ava.......' I stop and do something more useful instead.
I dig out a bandage roll from my pack and some ointment, which I rub on her arm cautiously, before applying the bandage roll.
Jason helps her sit up, and we feed her some food. She gobbles it down in painful gulps.
We then move to a safer place -the clusters of trees and put her to sleep.
Me and Jason sit outside the tent, watching the fire crackle.
' Hey, thanks for helping Ava back there. I....I thought you were jealous and.....'
I let out a laugh.' You really think I was jealous?'
He nods solemnly.' I was never jealous.... I just thought that maybe everything would change and something would go wrong.....'
He smiles.' I told you once, and I will tell you again, I'm ready to obey your command.'
It sounds funny coming for him and I laugh, feeling as if the world had been lifted off my shoulders. I was no longer the new Atlas.
