Chapter 25 - The Medium

“How did it go, Romeo?” Zayn asks when I walk into our room, throwing my jacket and the DVD box Cassie lent me on the bed. Instead of tossing myself to my bed, I just sit next to Zayn on his.

“The story for Romeo didn’t turn out well, I don’t think it’s a good omen if you call me that,” I say and Zayn rolls his eyes. “I don’t wanna go all ‘I’m fortune’s fool’, you know?”

“Do you know a quote from the play?” He asks, rather impressed and now I just roll my eyes.

“Not the point. The point here is that it didn’t go that well so it’s not amusing that you call me Romeo,” I state and he throws his hands to the air in surrender. “I went to kiss her and she turned her face. I know she told me it was too soon but still, I wish she didn’t do that.”

“What can I say? Women are hard to understand. Anyways, what did you bring there?” He asks and I remember the DVD box Cassie lent me. So I move and grab it to bring it to Zayn.

“Doctor Who. She told me that if I don’t cry with the series finale I’m not human,” I shrug as Zayn chuckles.

I open the box to check the discs inside but I find a note that I didn’t see before because I didn’t open it on my way here. It’s a small note and with a messy handwriting that is not Cassie’s. I’ve seen hers and this one is manlier.

I don’t like when you are sad so here’s my copy of the second series. Now your collection is complete again. I’m sorry for what happened, Cass.

With Love, Jake.

My eyes widen in surprise when I read the note. Probably Cassie didn’t remember this was stuck to the box. I’m sure that if she remembered this belonged to Jake, she wouldn’t have lent it to me.

“It was Jake’s,” I mumble and Zayn makes a noise of surprise, so I hand him the box with the note stuck to it. “The DVD box, it was Jake’s before.”

“This is great!” Zayn says and now I’m the one surprised. “While you were on another date, I was searching for a medium, you know? Someone who could actually tell us if we’re dealing with a ghost or not. So I found this woman, and she has great reviews. She doesn’t have a store, she only goes to your place and she requires an item from the person you want to contact. So this is great! Now we have an item and we can call this woman. I bet she’ll help us.”

“I dunno, Zayn. The fortune-teller was really shitty. I bet this other woman will also steal our money,” I complain and Zayn shakes his head.

“No, no. Look, here it says that she doesn’t charge unless we’re satisfied with her work. That’s her policy! She doesn’t do this for a living, for what I read, she only does this to help because she knows how hard it is to say goodbye and sometimes we don’t get a chance. Imagine! Maybe she’s the real deal and we can get Cassie to properly say goodbye to Jake and that would clear the way for you and you’d certainly help her.”

I’m still not sure about it, and I keep looking at the website. It’s very modest and simple, it almost doesn’t look like the website of a medium but more like the site of a consultant. I guess we can try one more time, and if she’s a scam too, then we don’t pay. It seems fair.

“Okay, let’s do this,” I agree and Zayn turns his laptop to type an email, I presume, to contact this woman. I still have some doubts about it but I won’t be sure until we try, right?

+ + + + +

It’s Friday by when the medium can meet us and as we live in a dorm in Uni and she’s not fond of visiting us here, she agreed on letting us meet her in her house. So here we are Zayn and I, waiting for her to open the door. I don’t know what to expect, a woman in gypsy clothes as well? A crazy woman with thirteen cats? I don’t know, but I certainly wasn’t expecting what we actually find.
