A Merman's Vision

Breathing softly,  I began to make out the remains of what used to be an underwater kingdom. Fleeing from it we're thousands of mermaids and mermen, either carrying their belongings or young. Out of all the fleeing ones, I could make out a lone merman struggling to help another one from under some debris. Others we're calling to him, motioning for him to leave the other one behind. I noticed that the struggling figure was Marc. The one he had been trying to save... was his father. Slowly, he became weaker, and weaker until he collapsed entirely.

"Save the prince!" People were shouting, pointing towards Marc.

One by one, guards grabbed Marc's lifeless body, slowly dragging him away from his only home and only family.

His eyes were cold and glassy, probably crying like a merman would, being underwater and all.

Suddenly, the vision was cut short by something I couldn't quite decipher. At once, I recognized the loud growl of what seemed to be a wolf.  Then, everything happened in slow motion.

Ripping me apart from Marc was Niko, fully transformed. It was all way too scary.  His face was pale, almost lifeless. His eyes a dark orange that scared the living day lights out of me. Slamming him into the wall, Niko roared and lifted his claws, ready to strike. Realizing what was happened, Marc swiftly locked out of his grip and twisted under, releasing himself from Niko's angry claws. The anger coming from Niko was unbearing. Just as they began to fight, the air became thick and heavy. I could hardly breathe. It was like a heat wave that never ended. The anger was slowly engulfing me, causing me to suffocate.  Reaching my hands out, I tried to get the guys attention, but they were too busy fighting. Finally having enough, I pushed myself forwards, clashing into them both. Watching me fall, their eyes opened wide as they realized what they had done.

Groggily, I opened my eyes and looked up at the ceiling above me. Trying to lift my arm, I winced realizing it was heavily bandaged. Beside me sat Niko and Marc, fuming, yet still guilty-looking. Luckily, the air was breathable again. Taking in a deep breath, I started to remember what had happened to me. First I fell,  grabbing the boys attention for just a second. Niko was too quick for his own good. Without realizing what he was doing, he slashed at me, just grazing my arm. Everything else was black after that.

"Are you okay?" Niko asked

I couldn't even believe that he was an angry, menacing werewolf just now. He looked so scared, like if he came out of a tornado. Marc was still fuming. Arms crossed, he didn't even bother to look at Niko.

"Yes...kind of." I answered

Just as Niko was about to say something, Marc got up and stormed out the room. On the chair was a note, printed in neat blue writing. Picking it up, Niko studied it carefully.

"Its blank." He said, furrowing his brow.

Let me see

I omitted, too tired to talk. It read;

You are the only one who can read this. I especially made this so your nosy little mentor can't read it. Meet me in the garden at noon. Pretend you can't see it. Lie if you really care about me. We have business to finish.

- Marc McDane Devello

I was confused by the last sentence.

Did you see anything?

Niko asked, momentarily confused. Almost forgetting to lie, I slowly shook my head no, regretting my decision. Looking straight into my eyes, Niko let out a chuckle.
