"Who said she was going to be a wife?"
I turned around to face Bree, Marc, and Cameron standing at the door. Each of them were in their fighting stances, wielding a weapon.
"I did, just a few years ago. Well, her father did." William's father says, not turning to face the group.
"What?" Marc ask, the grip on his sword hardening.
With a snap from his fingers, what had once been frozen was returned to it's normal state. At once, I hear the shattering of a vase and the struggling of Niko and William. Both of them suddenly stop, seeing all of us standing there.
"Jennifeeer!" Niko yells, running towards me.
He embraces me into a giant... wolf hug? He's not a wolf anymore, but his characteristics don't resemble those of a human. I quickly hug him back and struggle to keep myself from melting on the inside. My stomach is basically a puddle right now.
"Ahem."
My attention is shifted to William, who looks at Niko with a menacing glare. Before he can say anything, William's father speaks up.
"If I am not mistaken- which I am not- my son has a bride he must marry. I believe that woman is you."
I hear both Niko and Mark snort at the mention of the word 'you'.
"You must be kidding right?" Bree asks, cracking her knuckles.
"No, I am not. Perhaps your friend- my future daughter in law- may be able to tell you. "
Everyone suddenly stares at me. I can feel my face suddenly flush.
"Is it really true?" Niko asks, taking my hand in his. This makes me even more embarrassed.
"I-I mean I saw it, but it was never my decision." I quickly murmur.
That's when I remember.
"Why did you make that deal?" I ask William's father, my sadness suddenly turning to anger.
"To save your life." He states simply.
"But how?" I ask, squeezing Niko's hand tightly.
"As a child, did you know how your mother died?"
"No..."
"Did you know about any type of disease?"
"No..."
"Then your father never told you because if I hadn't taken your mother away from you, a plague would've killed you as it did her."
I was dumbstruck by the information. My mother? Sick? It didn't add up. All I remembered was her smiling face and soothing voice.
Everyone was still staring at me.
"W-what do you mean?" my hands felt limp in Niko's grip.
"Your family is dead, Jennifer." William says.
It literally takes me so long just to notice him in the room. When I do, my brain jolts all of it's attention to William. My vision is suddenly shrouded in red and I feel a sharp pain in my arm. I wince, and grab on to Niko.
"What's wrong?" he asks as Bree and Marc come up to me.
Bree looks up at William's father with a menacing glare.
"What did you do?"
William's father only chuckles.
"I'm not leaving until I have the girl, so you either hand her over or face my wrath, as well as his. He has a right to marry the woman he is entitled to."
Niko suddenly looks up, baring his fangs and growling.
Cameron and Marc both wield their swords and stand in front of me. I start to realize the mistake we're making. Compared to William's father, we're all powerless. I have to accept my fate, no matter how difficult it may seem. "Things will turn out to be the ways they don't seem," my mother would always say. It made no sense, yet at the same time it had some strange meaning. It's like a contradiction of itself, that may be repeated a million times and still be confusing. Some people say they understand what it means, but they actually don't. To this day, I still don't understand it's true meaning, but at least I can stop even worse things from happening. I don't want another death, especially not a permanent one.
"Guys, wait." I say, and once again everyone stares at me.
I take a deep breath.
"I-I-I..." My words fail to exit my mouth.
The pain from my arm attacks once again, sharper than ever.
"I accept your proposal."
Silence.
The tension is killing me. No one is saying anything , or even moving. Niko's hand suddenly is released from mine and when I look up to him, his eyes are dead, the color drained from his once vibrant green and blue eyes.
You're just lying right?
His voice, it feels like I haven't heard it in years.
Y-yea, it's only temporary.
His eyes brighten once again, returning to their normal state.
"Well, the deal is set. They will be married soon as possible." William's father says, turning around. "You already know what will happen if the deal is broken." With that he disappears, along with William. My vision is suddenly restored and my arm is completely fine.
"It's a spell." Bree says, immediately grabbing my left arm and inspecting it. Her finger reveals a small red puncture mark. My mind goes back to the day when I had been kidnapped. That red liquid...
"What red liquid?" Marc asks, clenching his fists.
Niko is staring at the wall, deep in thought.
"At that party, when I-I was kidnapped. One of 'them' injected me with a red liquid." I reply, my voice shaky.
Out of the blue, Bree picks up my arm, touching my shoulder with her palm.
Her eyes glow a deep magenta as her irises fade. When she returns, her speech is strange, as if she were speaking another language.
"Toxicus Amoris."
Her eyes turn back to normal, but she seems dazed.
"W-what just happened?" she asks, coming out of her trance.
"Latin." Niko says. "She was speaking Latin."
Everyone is silent for a moment.
"How did you know that?" Cameron asks, his tone not as friendly as I thought it would've sounded.
"No reason." He states simply.
"Well, if she was speaking Latin, then what did she say?"
"Toxic Love."
More Silence.
"What could that mean?" Marc asks, getting my attention.
Bree decides to butt in.
"If that's what I said, than this is going to be a lot harder than I thought..."
