It's not what it looks like.
Niko must've heard it, because he turned away from me and looked towards the door. His face immediately gushed red with embarresment and he let go of me.
It's my turn to take you to class, Jennifer. Your training with me also starts today.
I gently lifted myself off the bed and went to take a shower. I could hear their voices through the wall.
M- What were you doing?
N- I didn't do anything. She just fainted and I grabbed her. I swear, I didn't do anything.
M- Look, how about you stay out of this and leave her alone?
N- What do you mean "stay out of this?" I'm her mentor! Im supposed to teach and protect her.
They kept at it for hours, all along not noticing that I could hear their conversation. They eventually got to a touchy subject.
M- Don't you already have a girlfriend? Or is that just not enough for you?
N- What is wrong with you? I accidentally touch her for one second and you freak? What next? I kiss her and you have a heart attack?
His words almost knocked all the air out of me. Did he just say kiss? I tried my best to think quietly. I didn't want them to know I had been listening.
Too late. We are leaving. Now.
I recognized the inside voice of Marc. He seemed angry. I quickly finished changing and made my way out. What I saw was horrible. Marco's eyes had lost their charm. They were frustrated and all tangled up in deep emotion. Niko's face was like none I had ever seen before. He looked like an angry child who had swallowed a chili pepper. He quickly turned around and shot me a dirty look. Oops. I guess he heard that.
As Marc and I made our way towards the training grounds, I noticed something. Not much people were outside, despite the fact that class was going on everywhere around me.
Did he touch you?
I looked at him in surprise.
Well, did he?
I looked up at his somber eyes and sighed.
No. He didn't do anything to me.
We said nothing else as he led me to the open field. There weren't that many kids in my training session. It was supposed to be our "first experience" with a dragon. I couldn't even count the millions of times I had played with Estefano. I was almost amazed at the fact that hardly anybody had ever even communicated with a dragon before. Our first test was to become friends with the dragon. Mine was gorgeous with scales of some sort of golden morado and silvery wings.
She looked at me with what seemed to be generous eyes. Boy, was I wrong.
"Give me the food!" It was the first thing she snarled at me. How charming...
"Mind your manners much?" I said as she looked at me in a frightened way
"You can understand me?" Her roaring was causing a commotion
"Y- yes" people started to turn their heads towards us.
A girl just about my age came running up to me.
"Is it true?"she asked
"Can you really speak to dragons?" Her pretty almond eyes peeked out from under her long, silky bangs.
Someone behind her broke out into a fit of laughter. It was Myra.
" Of course not! She's just probably mentally challenged, right dear? Come on Bree." She began to walk back to her dragon.
Don't mess with her. I'm basically her slave just because she was born on the highway my father created.
My chest tightened as someone's voice rang out.
"A highway huh? Isn't that where most accidents happen? I'm sure Myra here is a perfect example of one of them."
The voice was confident and loud. It powered itself and radiantly pushed others away. I finally realized who's voice it was. Mine
