Afternoon beams of light shone through the open window while a light breeze blew every now and then. Occasionally, this breeze would turn the next page for you. Most of the time, this was a nuisance, since you hadn't finished reading the previous page. Your eyes scanned the words that became coherent sentences, but still nothing provided you with the needed information. Lazily, you rested your chin in the palm of your right hand while your left turned the pages.
Books were piled around various points in the room while others rested nicely on the oak shelves. The rectangular wooden table in front of you held smaller piles and surrounded the one book you were reading. An oddly shaped red carpet lay under you and gave you a nice cushion to sit upon. By the window that allowed the warm light in, there was a podium carrying a book that you had already scanned through. Red and gold tapestries hung neatly in the small room, which held the podium. This small room transitioned into the larger room where you were sitting. Chandeliers of brass and teal hung overhead, but gave no light due to it still being day.
Despite the fact that you had gained no information on the song, you were currently enjoying this temporary calm. You were hoping that you wouldn't have to read countless books, but when you arrived at the castle two weeks ago Geela gave little information. She merely stated that she had learned the song from her mother. Clarencia sadly wasn't of much help either. The Queen of Diamonds only mentioned that she had heard the song from her own mother as well. To your benefit though, the Queen offered you her library and permitted you to stay as long as you liked.
This you thought strange, since if there was information regarding the song in her library, why didn't she know it? Granted, you wouldn't expect her to remember every detail of every book, but the places mentioned in the song weren't exactly common. Figuring that you might as well try, you thanked her and began your search. As for your companions, Fade had no problem, but she did have to return to her forest. There were things that she needed to take care of and keep in order. She stayed for one evening and the two of you essentially chatted among yourselves for the entire evening while sitting under the apple orchard. The next day, you said your farewells and hoped that you would see her soon. Of course at the rate you were going that was highly unlikely.
Concerning the brothers, they also had business to attend to back in their territory. Apparently, they forgot to mention that they governed a city of their own that went by the name of Castersin. This was an ocean front city and they depended on the brothers' protection. Hearing that the brothers actually gave aid to others was somewhat shocking. They stated though that in exchange for their protection, the city was expected to pay a sum of money every month; a tax if you will. Moreover, you learned that the currency in the world was simply silver. Personally, you knew that they failed to mention it before because they didn't want to stimulate your curiosity; they desired for you to always remain in that castle.
Thus when they heard you would be staying, there was quite the argument. They said you could simply take some of the books with you and come back to the castle. You countered with the fact that you couldn't possibly carry all the books you wanted with you. When they mentioned that some more birds could carry them, you really couldn't argue with that. Instead, you stated that you wouldn't get as much work done because of them and their constant antics. Continuing this argument, you went on to say that all three of you had important work to get done and that it would be best to have some space. Moreover, you stated that Clarencia would be more than capable of keeping you safe. After what seemed like a day of arguing, they finally agreed to leave you at Clarencia's castle.
About after one week of being here, you received a letter from someone unexpectedly. To your surprise it was from Rollta. He wrote in the letter that he sent the note to Clarencia's castle, since he trusted her more than the brothers. You didn't even know that Rollta knew Clarencia personally, but apparently he did. Moreover, he intended for the letter to be sent to Clarencia who would then send one of her birds with the letter personally to you and you alone.
Regarding the other information in the letter, he explained that things went surprisingly well when he talked to Umelius. Instead of the king killing him, Umelius appointed him as his apprentice. The king told Rollta that he was wrong this entire time and that Rollta needed to be rewarded for realizing this ahead of time, otherwise things might have taken a horrendous turn for the worst. Thus reading the letter brought you great relief and you responded with a letter that expressed that emotion. You didn't receive a response back, but such a reply wasn't necessary. He was still alive and well.
Your attention turned back to the book in front of you, but you had grown tired of it. Were you just looking for the wrong information, were you not supposed to search for the names of the strange places? Frustrated and tired, you pushed the book aside and rubbed the bridge of your nose. This was utterly vexing. Looking over the contents on top of the table, your eyes turned their gaze to the amulet.
Instead of looking at the names, you examined the lines after them. You had done this before and once again arrived at the same conclusions. Avaka dealt with music, Ganab was known for food, Hanec had an ocean, etc. Were you supposed to accomplish the various tasks listed in the lyrics when you arrived at these places though? Previously, you had looked for the words that were in the lines while you searched for the names, but it was bearing no fruit. None of this was giving any results.
Personally, you wanted to find something before the brothers came back, since you knew researching would only become harder with them around. Sadly, this plan was failing horribly and the brothers would be back by tomorrow. Groaning in irritation, you fell onto your back and just lay on the carpet. Intricate oil paintings of flowers covered the ceiling of the library and they helped to distract your annoyed mind.
As you lay there, the warmth of the light began to make you drowsy and slowly you started to close your eyes. It felt wonderful to give your mind a break, but you knew you would have to continue soon. At times you wanted to quit this search, but something in the back of your mind kept pushing you to go onward. There seemed to be something driving you forward like you needed this. You would try to push this desire away, but it refused to comply.
A few more minutes passed and you couldn't fall asleep. Sighing loudly, you rested your right forearm over your eyes, as if that would somehow help. Not a moment after doing this, you heard the library door open. Sliding your arm off your face, you peered over at the individual now closing the door. Short purple hair was tied back in a ponytail while orange eyes gleamed. Geela smiled at you before running over to you. Having no patience for her boundless amounts of energy, you rolled over onto your side, so that you would face away from her. She skipped over to you nonetheless before going over to the other side of the table. Picking up a book that you already looked through, she flipped through the pages quickly before setting it down and doing the same with another one. When she was satisfied with her rather brief searching, she rested her knuckles on her hips and huffed.
"You haven't got anywhere, have you, _____?" she questioned in an energetic voice.
Rolling your eyes at this, you merely grunted in response. You debated on saying something rude, but decided against it. As you now lay on your stomach with your head in your arms, you didn't see Geela grin and come over to you. She grinned even wider before she began poking you in the side. Honestly, you failed to understand why she would come into the library and then proceed to bother you. Of course, you never voiced this to her, but you did think it. On the other hand, you figured that she considered you some elder sister of hers and merely wanted to spend some time with someone closer to her age. Thus you held your tongue and allowed her to be her hyper self.
"You know, I wish I could ask my grandmother for you. Then maybe you could gain some information regarding the song," she said, continuing with her poking.
Normally, you would've just stayed quiet, but you widened your eyes at this. How had you been so stupid? Swiftly, you lifted yourself off the ground and turned back to your reading table. Why hadn't you thought of it before? Perhaps, if you could find something on Geela's grandmother then you could find information on the amulet. Moreover, you could look for history on the previous Queens of Spades as well as the other kings and queens.
Geela, caught off guard by your sudden movement, fell back and merely looked at you with surprise. Figuring that she might as well find out what had caused your change in mood; she crawled over to you and glanced at the books you were examining. You merely looked at the binding on the books and tossed them into one of the piles if they proved useless to you.
When you saw Geela watching you, you asked, "Geela, where are the books about the previous kings and queens?"
Her eyes lit up, as she understood the meaning behind your actions. Nodding excitedly, she ran around the library and retrieved all the books she could gather. She had to make several trips, but eventually she set all the books you needed on the table.
Looking up at her and feeling your energy return, you inquired, "Would you like to help me, Geela?"
"Yes, I want to understand the song too," she replied.
Smiling at her excitement, you nodded and began searching the books along with her.
