Before you hit the water, you could see the brothers hurriedly pick up your daggers, once the mermaid, who was sitting on the rock, jumped into the water. In the next second, though, you were submerged. Underneath the water, it maintained its inky black hue while bubbles, tinted turquoise due to the strange light at the bottom, floated up to the surface. Even your skin and clothing were taking on the deathly glow. Despite the strange water, you could tell that there was water from the ocean mixed in, for the salt stung at your shoulder wound.
This wasn't your main concern, however, as your limbs were now being tugged on. Blue hands gripped at your wrists and ankles, pulling you farther and farther down into the seemingly bottomless body of water. Sapphire blue eyes glimmered with malice, as sickening smiles painted the mermaids blue lips. Their hair, the color of the void, swirled around them while blending in with the water. It made it seem, as though sea snakes were swimming towards you, so that they could consume you.
Some of the mermaids tugged at your strands of (h/c) hair, trying to rip it from your head. Others jabbed at you in the sides with their fingers, laughing while doing so. When one tugged on your left shoulder, you let out a large gasp of air, which you desperately needed. Your scream was muted by the surrounding water, as you only found yourself going lower. Where were the brothers? Did they decide to leave you behind? No, they assured you that they wouldn't let you die, so where were they? Were they having trouble dealing with the mermaids; were they losing the fight?
The mermaids thrashing tails prevented you from hearing anything above while they made it seem like they would beat you with their blue scales. Their flowing hair blocked your view as well. With the combination of both, you felt utterly hopeless. As your breath was quickly leaving you, a break in between the strands of void occurred. For just a second, you could see the twins swimming towards you and the mass of mermaids.
When you felt they were near enough, you tried to keep your focus on the description of Rinned and away from the pain the mermaids were inflicting on you. Some of the mermaids released their grip on you, so that they could deal with the now attacking brothers. Granted, their sabers didn't move as swiftly as they would on land, but they were still a threat to the mermaids. Soon, all the mermaids had left you to fight the twins, since they probably figured you were already close to death. High-pitched hisses and screeches echoed throughout the water, which could only be heard due to the mermaids' connection to the water.
With only ten seconds of air most likely left, you had the image of Rinned captured in your mind. Thus, as the seconds dwindled, you muttered out the name. As your eyes began to close, you didn't see the purple watery substance below you. Instead, you could only feel your limbs slacken. When your eyes were nearly closed, you felt your arms being jerked downwards. More hisses and screeches sounded before something tugged on your left ankle. This grip disappeared, as it followed a cry of pain. You couldn't see who was pulling you down nor could you view who had tried to pull you upwards, for your vision had become blurred. Before you lost consciousness, however, you felt the softest silk embrace your form.
~~~~~~~~~~
Something warm pressed against your lips before vanishing, as you could feel water rushing up your throat. Coughing it up, you felt it run down your lips and chin. You continued to expel the water in your lungs before your vision went from complete darkness to a blurred state. After a few more coughs, you could finally see clearly, but your head hurt horribly. Bringing your right hand upwards, you rested it against your head, as though that would instantly cure the pain. Sadly, this didn't happen.
Looking upwards, you were met by the sight of Heart's relieved countenance. Before you could even ask where you were, you felt yourself being pressed against the male. His arms were wrapped tightly around your waist, which hurt not only because of his grip but also from the mermaids' jabs. You didn't say anything on the matter, as you saw him nuzzle his face in the left crook of your neck. The male's wet locks brushed up against your skin, as you could hear him muttering words of relief.
Resting your hands awkwardly on his back, you peered up to see Diamond staring down at the two of you but mainly just you. A small smile painted his lips while his reddish-orange eyes were filled with the joy of seeing you alive. As Heart pulled away and helped you up to your feet, a visible frown appeared on your face, which was partly from the headache.
Both brothers were soaking wet, but so were you. What bothered you were the many scratches, with some being quite deep, that covered their forms. Their face paint was completely washed off while Diamond's hair was once again short. His red locks were messily cut, indicating that a mermaid probably had grabbed his hair. Thus, his only option most likely would've been to chop off the long locks.
Pushing some wet strands of hair from your face, you brought your left index and middle fingers up to your lips, where the sensation was still present. Glancing at Heart, who still had his previous hair length intact, you felt a bit of heat rise to your cheeks. Trying to hide your faint blush, you pulled your fingers away and went to rest the palms of your hands on the hilts of your daggers. You couldn't do this, though, since they were gone. Noticing your action, Diamond summoned the daggers to his hands before giving them to you. Thanking him, you put the daggers in their holders before placing your hands on top of them.
Focusing your gaze back on the brothers, you uttered, "Thank you both for saving my life back there. If it weren't for you two, I wouldn't be able to continue this journey." Scratching the back of your neck nervously with your right hand, you continued to say, "I apologize for causing you two to have such injuries."
"You're quite welcome, my dear lady, but you shouldn't worry about us. We'll heal up just fine. Besides, you didn't leave there unscathed either. You're covered in bruises," Heart replied, casting a worried gaze at said injuries.
"Moreover, we stated that we wouldn't let you be drowned by those creatures. We could never let you die, Miss _____," Diamond added with a caring look in his eyes.
Not being to suppress the smile, which was tugging at your lips, you responded, "You two are something else, you know that."
Chuckling at your statement, Heart wore his characteristic smirk while Diamond allowed his typical smile to stretch across his lips. Thus, knowing that all three of you were safe, you glanced around at your surroundings. Grass in all varieties of green blew slightly in a calm breeze that washed over the land while fields of grain were among the blades of green. A blue sky was overhead the land mass. Seas of white clouds encircled the floating area, as they shielded the viewer from seeing what lay below the land. To your right, you saw the tall wrought iron gates, which stood above a hundred feet.
"So we made it to Rinned, I see," you mentioned more to yourself than to the brothers.
"Indeed, though, I suggest we all rest out here for awhile," Diamond spoke, taking his brother and his pack off his shoulders.
"I suppose that would be a good idea," you answered, as Heart handed your pack to you.
Reaching into their pack, Diamond pulled out a beige colored jar and tossed it over to you. Catching it, you looked at it curiously before the red-haired male stated that it was salve for your bruises. Thus, you set the jar and your pack on the ground while you searched through the backpack for a new change of clothes. When you had retrieved some new undergarments, a pair of purple skinny jeans, a black long-sleeve v-neck, and your black flip-flops, you closed the pack and stood up with everything in your arms.
"Well, can you two face the other way and make sure that no resident of this place comes this way?"
Instead of giving you some perverted remark, Heart merely nodded along with Diamond. They turned around, forming a protective wall, as you changed and applied the salve. You could only assume that Heart had refrained from such a comment because of the possibility of some stranger seeing you. Regardless, it was still awkward changing when the brothers were only a few feet away and could easily look over their shoulders at you. Thankfully, they respected your privacy and didn't turn around.
After placing your dirty clothes into your laundry bag you brought with you, you put the bag back into the backpack. Thus done with everything you needed to do, you announced you were finished to the brothers. Both turned to face you and nodded in response. With this in mind, you switched places with the twins after handing the salve back to Diamond. As you were doing this, you noticed that their wounds were already beginning to heal. Truly, they were lucky to have such an ability.
While the two changed and tended to the deeper scratches on their forms, you crossed your arms over your chest, as your pack rested near your feet. Your gaze settling on the wrought iron gates, you found your mind thinking back to Iris and her sisters. Hopefully, the two had reached their older sister alright. In reality, you were only worried about the younger ones. If Iris had told you of her dilemma, you would've helped her, but instead she decided to leave you in mystery. Granted, she probably thought you would harm her if she told you. Sighing, you were just glad that you wouldn't have to deal with her in the near future or possibly forever, depending on whether you ever returned to that world or not.
