It only took one hour to sell off the remaining jars. By that point the brothers had already completed loading the empty crates onto the wagon. Thus, they were simply waiting by it while keeping a close eye on you. They seemed incredibly suspicious of Iris, but you could understand their reasoning behind it. You only just met her, and she readily stated that she could take you to the oceans of Hanec. It was a little odd, but her explanation for her offer seemed valid enough for the moment. Moreover, you weren't going to waste the opportunity to move forward on your journey. The last time you made a hurried decision, though, things didn't turn out so well.
At the same time, you were in a different world, and you doubted that this girl knew about your arrival ahead of time. If she were to take you to some king of hers, you had your daggers with you as well as the brothers. All in all you were more prepared to handle such a situation should it arise.
Thus, after Iris and you finished your sells, the four of you set off for the oceans and island of Hanec. You were half expecting the wagon to be pulled by one of the horses that roamed the plains back by the brothers' castle, but you were met by two red roans. Their pale pelts, which transitioned into darker red shades around the face and feet, were groomed well and had somewhat of a glisten under the afternoon sun. Moreover, their red mane and tail shined, complimenting their pelts perfectly.
As for the wooden wagon, it was quite large, since it had to store about twenty small crates. Furthermore, there were a few smaller crates filled with supplies for the trip back. You were just surprised that there was room for the brothers to sit in the back. Heart was causally leaning his back against the right side of the wagon with his legs stretched in front of him. Diamond, on the other hand, was sitting with his left leg stretched out. Concerning his right leg, he had it close to his chest, so that he could rest right arm on it. Granted, they both looked rather comfortable.
Regarding yourself, you sat next to Iris at the front of the wagon. The two of you occasionally switched holding the reins, so as to give the other a break. As you were doing this, you two chatted among yourselves, learning more information about the other. Iris would mainly talk about her two younger sisters, who had to manage the bee farm while she was away. It amazed you to learn that a ten year old and seven year old were running their entire farm. She went on to explain that they had lost their parents a few years ago due to a storm that destroyed the boat they were taking back to the mainland. When you went to give her your condolences, she merely brushed it aside and stated that accidents like that happened all the time.
Such news may have comforted her grief somewhat, but it only heightened your worries. You didn't survive a horde of demented clowns just to be killed by a storm at sea. Hopefully, one of these frequent storms would remain absent on your trip through the water.
Sensing your concern, Iris began to ask you about where you came from and such. You kept the information minimal, not wanting to expose the fact that you could go across worlds. Frankly, you didn't know what magic existed in Daloria, and you didn't want to introduce some concept that might cause you to be classified as some monster or such. Thus, you explained that the three of you came from some grassland a long way off and were currently taking a break from it. Once she seemed satisfied with your explanation of your home, she moved on to ask you simple questions, an example being "What is your favorite pastime?" and other basic inquiries.
Throughout this questioning process, the brothers remained quite silent. Occasionally, you would glance over your shoulder at them to see if something was wrong. Every time you looked back, they would appear to be lost in thought. It was strange to say the least, but you pushed it aside and continued your conversation with Iris.
Evening rolled around faster than you expected, and you found yourself outside the city limits. Luckily, there was enough moonlight to guide the four of you on the path. Iris mentioned that it would be better to keep going until the morning, so as not to attract thieves with a campfire. You had no problem with this, and the brothers didn't voice any complaints. Besides, she had probably traveled this trail countless times before, so you trusted her word on it.
"Tomorrow, since we're not stopping, we should reach an inn about two hours after sunrise. The horses can rest there in the stables while we take a break inside. After the inn, it will take three days of travel to reach the city of Mareandaqua. We'll travel to the docks and take the ship to the island."
"I have no issue with that plan, but Iris is there any boats that circle the island and explore the oceans? I need to search the oceans for something important."
"Hmm, there aren't any making such expeditions at this time. There are too many storms over the oceans of Hanec. The only boat is the one that takes people between the island and the mainland. You'll have to wait a few months before a boat like that becomes available. Why do you need to sail them anyway?"
"Well, you see, I'm looking for mermaids," you finally admitted, glancing down at your hands and waiting for her reaction.
"Why on earth would you want to look for those creatures? They're not exactly friendly, ______. If anything, they may talk to you for a few moments before attempting to drown you."
"I'm well aware of that, but I must see them. Do you know where they live in the oceans?"
"I..." Iris was about to respond, but was cut off by Heart pushing the two of you down.
You were about to ask him what he was doing, but you heard something whiz over your head. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw a figure some distance away holding a bow and arrow. Due to the darkened sky, you couldn't see their characteristics that well, but you didn't need those to know that they were a threat.
"My dear lady, you stay here with the girl. Diamond and I will take care of the enemies. If any somehow manage to get around us, I trust that you'll be able to handle yourself. I don't want to have to tell you the consequences if you should receive serious injuries."
"You're actually leaving me to fight by myself? What exactly happened to the two of you these past several hours?"
"I assure you that my brother and I would stay by your side, but doing so might only bring more danger to you. Thus, I expect you to take care of yourself unless you want either my brother or me to take care of your injuries."
"Tch, I'll be fine, you perverted clown," you muttered, blushing a bit and signaling him to get going.
With that, he removed his left hand from Iris's right shoulder and his right hand from your left shoulder. He ruffled your hair some before darting off the wagon to join Diamond, who had already incapacitated and killed the archer you saw. The moment Heart leapt off the wagon, Iris moved the horses forward just a bit before stopping. As for you, you unsheathed your daggers and readied yourself for a potential fight.
"_____, will those two be alright?" Iris asked you, displaying some worry in her yellow eyes.
"You have no reason to hold any concern, Iris. They're probably having a great time right now. Trust me; those sabers at their sides aren't for show."
"I'll take your word for it. I really should've learned to defend myself, but taking care of my sisters is hard work, and I never have the opportunity to do so. I'm glad I met you three, otherwise I might've never seen them again."
"Well, you have nothing to worry about. Those thieves have no idea who they're picking a fight with. They'll regret their decision to attack us soon enough."
"Is that so, little girl? I think you're the one who has miscalculated," a male's voice sounded behind you.
Alarm racing through your being, you swiftly turned around to look at the back of the wagon. Sitting on the backside of the wagon was the owner of the voice, which was a little lower than a tenor range. A navy blue shirt covered his torso while shorts in the same hue went over his legs. The rest of his arms and legs were covered by navy blue bandages while black sandals were on his feet. Two stainless steel daggers were attached to his hips. His hair hung just past his ears and was of a pure white hue. As for his eyes, they were yellow. Lastly, a maroon piece of fabric was wrapped around his neck and the part of his chest, which would've been exposed had the cloth not been there.
"Oh? I think you're the one who's mistaken. You obviously don't know the enemies I've encountered in my time," you replied, daggers now raised in front of you.
"So, you want to play then, little girl? Well, I have no issue obliging the wish of a child," he replied, getting up from his position and standing to the height of six feet and two inches.
Within the next second, he sprinted across the back of the wagon. You wasted no time in grabbing Iris and rolling off the wagon with her. Landing on the dirt path, you signaled her to stay put before you held up your left dagger, blocking an attack from the male. Your first battle in this world had begun.
