The song at the side is what gave me part of the idea, as it gave me the idea of flaws, like being a werewolf and vampire.
Chapter. 1
Haley's POV
I glared at my friend Abi when she brought the subject up, she immediately sat back in her chair pretending she hadn't said anything at all. Then she sat back up, before asking me the same question, "Haley, I'm serious, aren't you scared?" I slouched down, knowing she wouldn't let the topic drop, so I eventually took a deep breath.
"Look Abi, I don't want to talk about it right now." I sighed deeply, waiting for the lesson to end. I hadn't paid attention to anything the teacher had said, which was the beauty of the back chairs. Abi stared at me,
"It's only three days till they do the next draw of tributes. Seriously, aren't you in the slightest worried?" She asked almost concerned that I wasn't showing any worry. I hesitated,
"Yes...yes I am scared." I said bluntly, reaching down to get my bag as I heard the bell go. Abi said nothing more to me as we walked out of the classroom, we walked straight towards our lockers, shoved our belongings in them, then stood there waiting for the lunch bell to go. I wouldn't be called the cool girl of the school, I wouldn't be called the teachers pet, more of the rebel that most people avoided except Abi, who was sort of thought the same as me. The dumb cheerleaders, with their horribly short skirts and high waisted tops just made me think they looked like complete sluts. I myself just wore a reasonable length skirt with black laced tights, a tank top and a fake leather jacket. I didn't show off my body parts like the supposed 'cool kids' did, if they knew the truth about me, I'd be the coolest teen around. Which is one of the reasons why I am so scared about the draw in three days. They, don't know the truth about me, but if they did I would be taken into the Blood Games, quicker than they'd started. Yes, I said it, The Blood Games. The thing that ruined our modern world, Vampires. They attacked the whole of the world, wiping out werewolves in their path, me being one that survived. Eventually they made a treaty with the humans, instead of killing billions of humans, they could host the Blood Games.
During this terrible event, 20 humans and 10 vampires are shoved into an arena, the humans are picked during the draw. Once there, they must see who can survive the longest against the vampires, with just simple weapons. The last person standing can live but must participate in the next years event. Basically in simple words, it's a chance for vampires own amusement. Every living human around the world must send in their name for the draw, if not, the Virtūte vampires, who are basically the vampire police, will track them down and have them killed. My job as a werewolf was to wipe out the vampires and protect humans, but I can't find any of my kind to do that, everyone thinks we are extinct but I'm still here. I have an unlimited source of blood in my body, which is another reason why the vampires kidnapped our kind, for a blood pet. But if I'm picked, the whole Blood Games, will be destroyed if I succeed.
I gulped back all my thoughts, as I went into lunch. I reached down to pick up a knife and fork out of the holder, when another boy reached down at the same time. As his hand touched mine for a split second, I knew his exact thoughts, "why is this girls hand so hot." I feel no cold, my body stays at a high temperature and stays that way, but to a human my body temperature feels like an oven. But by his expression, it didn't seem that he found my body temperature a shock, even so, his hand felt extremely cold to normal. We stared into each other's eyes as if we were trying to read each other's thought, only then did I realise he was actual quite hot. He had a muscular body, with no blemishes and dark, chocolate brown hair that covered his forehead. I thought of one possibility but it seemed unreal, so I shook the idea off.
------------
He held his hand out, "My names Tom." He said. I could tell he just wanted to touch my hand again, and used a hand shake as an excuse. "And you are?" He said holding his hand out still.
"Haley," I said bluntly refusing his shake.
"Just a hand shake," he said defensively. I ignored him and refused until he said, "so your that rude, you won't even take a hand shake?" He asked loudly so everyone heard.
"Fine." I said grabbing his hand and crushing his knuckles together as I did. He shook it firmly, not looking hurt by my strength, that's when I became suspicious of him,
"So, you lookin' forward to the Blood Games?" He grinned.
"Why would you ask that?" I asked sternly,
"What?" He said raising his hands out as if he surrendered. "Just tryin' to make conversation," he said defensively.
"Well here's a conversation," I said, "bye." I added before waving sarcastically and walking towards the front of the cue. Tom walked out the room, not bothering to eat before talking to a gang of boys and looking at me now and then, before pointing. I sat down next to Abi, ignoring yet another question from her, when the news on the monitor announced something.
"Instead of the usual draw in the Blood Games," the reporter started, "from now on, the ten vampires will be picking two tributes each." I looked back at Tom, then saw him wink cheekily at me, before walking out the door, chewing a piece of chewing gum.
------------
I sat at the back of the classroom looking up at the clock, sadly there was still fifteen minutes left till the end of the lesson. We didn't have homework today due to the draw coming up. The teacher chatted on, becoming completely off track from the subject. Someone turned around and passed me a letter from the front. It read, 'give to Haley' on the front, so I opened it. I briefly scanned the letter before looking up to see who had sent it, but of course, that same cheeky wink met my eyes at the corner of the class. I read the note more carefully the second time, it read,
"Hailey,
Sorry if we got off on the wrong foot,
I didn't mean to offend you in anyway."
I shrugged by this point thinking, what a load of rubbish before carrying on,
"Anyway,
Please meet me round the back of
The gym, I really want to talk to you.
Love, Tom
Xx"
I glared at him when I read the kisses, before folding up the note, but that was when the teacher noticed the note. The teacher snatched it out of my hand before asking me to read the note out to the class. I reluctantly read the note outloud through gritted teeth, ignoring the kisses when the teacher said, "you've left out the kisses on the end." I almost growled at her before bluntly saying,
"Kiss...kiss" at the end. I saw Tom snigger at this, only to be rewarded with a dagger glare from me. I sat back down, before hearing the bell as class was dismissed.
