Chapter. 7

Haley's POV

I watched Brooke sleep peacefully, it must have been almost eleven o'clock in the morning, as the sun was almost midway in the sky. I guess Brooke hadn't had much rest during the games because she'd been sleeping since yesterday afternoon. I slowly climbed down the tree with a small metal beaker, which was left on the floor. It was probably from the last blood games, but now it was mine. I scooped up a load of the river water before bringing it up to the top. I made a quick filter out of some thin cloth that had ripped off Brooke's top, then I poured it into an old plastic bottle which I cleaned out. I repeated it until the water was practically clean, then I heated it up over the fire in the metal beaker, to destroy any bad bacteria or any thing. I let it cool, then gave half to Brooke when she woke up.

-----------

I was rather fond of Brooke now, she was like a little sister to me. We started catching the food together, finding fire wood together, boiling the water together, and I occasionally agreed we could play hide and seek, but I made her take a spear if we played.

"Haley?" Brooke said

"Yes?" I replied as usual.

"Can we play a game?" She asked, I sighed, before saying,

"Which game?"

"The one where you stand in front of a tree, then turn away and count to five, then I have to get as close as I can to your tree and when you turn around I have to be hidden. I've forgotten what it's called." She grinned

"Predator?" I said

"Yeah! That's it! Please!" She said. I would have said no, but I could sense when someone was within half a mile of us, with my wolf instincts. Brooke never asked why I could sense someone close or far away, or why I could destroy vampires or kill someone quicker than they could kill me, she just became use to it.

"Hmmmn, okay. Only one game though." I smiled

"Yay!" Brooke yelled with joy, pushing me towards the tree she wanted me to start from. I stood in front of it, letting her get ready, then turned around and counted to five. Sure enough when I turned around she was hidden, then the second time she made it to my tree. "I WON!" She grinned.

"Don't you think we need more people to play predator?" I grinned.

"Probably," she smiled.

-----------

I watched Brooke dance around with joy, around the fire, whilst I sharpened my spear. She was safe for now as no one was near. "Brooke?" I asked suddenly. She stopped quickly then sat down next to me,

"Yeah?" She said.

"Who picked you for the games?" I asked curious of which vampire was sinister enough to pick an innocent twelve year old.

"The one with short, spiky, strawberry blond hair and they're tall. I don't know his name though." She replied.

"Can't believe Archie would do such a thing." I snarled mostly to myself.

"How do you know him?" She asked

"Old friends," I replied.

"Really? You were friends with him?" She asked.

"Let's just say, I've encountered him many times." I replied

"Who picked you?" She asked

"Tom." I said through gritted teeth.

"I know which him." She said proudly,

"I hate his... stinkin' guts." I replied, realising I couldn't swear with Brooke around. Brooke said nothing more to me, she climbed back up the tree, whilst I cooked some food over the fire.

-----------

"Do you have a crush, Haley?" Brooke asked me as we ate our dinner.

"No." I replied bluntly.

"Course you do! Everyone does!" She said

"Well let's just say, anyone I love seems to get destroyed, so I avoid having crushes." I replied

"But I thought you loved me as a sister!" She said

"But I can protect you properly without having to worry as your easy to watch." I replied, "I wouldn't let anyone hurt you and if they did, they'd never live to tell the tale." I replied

"Who keeps destroying people you love?" She asked.

"The vampires." I replied bluntly

"Who have they destroyed?" She asked more and more interested.

"My best friend, probably my crush as I can't find him-" I started

"Ha! I told you that everyone had a crush! Who else have they destroyed?" She interrupted. I took in a deep breath of air so that I wouldn't cry,

"and my...family." I said

"They killed your whole family! Why?" She asked

"They don't like me." I said bluntly, not wanting to tell Brooke the truth. Brooke asked no more, realising I didn't like to talk about it.

-----------

"LOOK AT ME!" Brooke yelled hanging upside down from a branch.

"You be careful!" I grinned.

"Ha ha! I bet you couldn't do this!" She grinned. I realised I hadn't been paying attention if someone was near. I heard a branch snap at least half a mile away.

"Brooke! Come back! There's someone nearby!" I yelled at her.

"What!" She yelled.

"Brooke!" I yelled back. Before watching her drop to the ground in confusion. I heard someone approach closer, so I did what I had to. Defend Brooke.

-----------

The person walked towards Brooke, a dagger at the ready. They were only human so I could destroy them with ease. I watched Brooke whimper and quiver as the person pinned her down.

"Help me!" She yelled. But before she could finish I was on the person already. I threw my spear from the tree, straight into their back. Brooke stood up, running to me for a comfort hug,

"It's okay, they won't hurt you," I replied trying to comfort her.

"They-they-they tried..." She said through tears, "they tried to kill me."

"Don't worry, they're dead now." I said lifting her up the tree.
