Chapter. 8
Haley's POV
Ever since the surprise attack, Brooke's been terrorised. She doesn't speak as much, she doesn't eat a lot, she barely sleeps at night and her normal self isn't showing. I became more and more worried of her state she was in as days went past. We occasionally were told how many days the games had been going for by the announcer and as I knew it was a a Friday, I was waiting for the usual call to say what day we were on.
"Welcome to the fifty-eighth day of the Blood games, we are down to eight human tributes, and still ten vampires." The announcer said. I shuddered slightly, realising I'd been here almost two months and twelve people have been killed. I almost felt that Brooke was on her way out.
------------
"Brooke, please eat, for me?" I asked holding out some pigeon I cooked for her as it was her favourite food. "If you die, you'll brake my heart, please?" I said.
"Fine." Brooke replied, reaching out and eating the pigeon before drinking the hot water I gave her to warm her up.
"Do you feel better now?" I asked
"Yes." Brooke replied. She cuddled up to me, shivering like mad, so I took my coat off and used it as a blanket for her. "Won't you get cold?" She asked.
"Brooke, have you noticed how warm I am?" I asked
"Yes, but you'll get cold without your coat." She replied
"I have my leather jacket on." I replied, before letting her lie on my lap to warm her up with my body heat. I heard her fall asleep eventually, so I started sharpening my spear, in case of an attack.
------------
I watched Brooke sleep, when I heard a rustle in the tree next to me. I lifted my spear in case it was a person, but just as I was about to throw the spear, I noticed that face instantly, Joey.
"Haley! I thought you had been killed!" Joey gasped, swinging on a vine to get to my tree.
"Really? Me dead? I thought you'd been killed!" I gasped.
"I brought you your rucksack and weapon. I was so worried when you never came back to the tree, I thought the vampire finished you off." He said hugging me, I thanked him for my bag then said,
"Well, it's a long story, just make sure you don't wake Brooke." I grinned.
"I'm starving, I've been hunting all day but I can't find any food other than bugs," he grinned
"Well, your just in time for tea." I grinned passing the leftovers of the cooked pigeon to him.
"How?" He asked looking at my collection of food.
"Let's just say I like to store my food." I grinned
"Who's the little girl?" He said pointing at Brooke
"Brooke, she's the youngest in the games, and we're like sisters now." I replied.
"Well, she sure found the right person to live with." He chuckled staring at my 'home in a tree'
"Do you wanna sleep here tonight?" I offered.
"Would you mind?" He asked
"Not at all, but you get last picks on the branch. That's Brooke's branch, that's my 'supposed' kitchen branch where I dry the fish on and that's my branch." I said pointing at a flat branch.
"How about here?" He asked, lying down on an empty branch.
"Whatever as long as it doesn't affect where me and Brooke are sleeping." I grinned. I was so relieved to see Joey, but I hoped Brooke didn't try and kill him thinking he's an intruder.
-----------
It was dawn, I watched Brooke and Joey sleep. Joey snored like a pig, which became rather annoying after a while. I noticed Brooke tossing and turning, so I knew she was waking up.
"Morning sleepy head," I grinned when her eyes finally opened. "Do you want any breakfast?" I offered.
"No thanks," she said stretching her arms out. "I finally slept well, but I feel all dizzy." She replied.
"Your not drinking or eating enough," I replied, holding out some fried fish and hot water. She took it and started eating, before turning and noticing the snoring.
"Who's that?" She asked, panic in her voice.
"Joey, don't worry he's good, you'll like him, he had a little sister and I'm sure he will treat you like one." I smiled
"Is he the crush you were talking about?" She asked. I gulped slightly,
"He's just a friend," I replied bluntly.
"Really?" She asked.
"Really." I gulped
"Really, really?" She repeated, becoming rather irritating,
"Yes, as many really's as you want to say." I replied. Joey started to stir at our conversation,
"Morning." He grinned, climbing down to us. "You must be Brooke," he grinned
"The one and only," Brooke grinned back. I watched Joey tease Brooke whilst I filtered some water to drink. The Blood games didn't seem all that bad when no ones after you.
