Chapter. 5
Haley's POV
A person came around and put a tight metal ring around my leg near my ankle, they wouldn't say what they were for, but I already knew. When you get too close to the end of the arena, it will give you a strong shock that will knock you out. I've watched it been used on the last games. I looked for Joey, but then I was shoved towards a van. A prefect strapped me in tightly, so that I couldn't move, then I felt the van start up. I looked around for Joey, but there were too many tributes in the van that I couldn't find him. As the van stopped I felt something tight being placed over my face, it was a blind fold. I couldn't see anything and as I was escorted out the van and into the arena, I stumbled over every rock. I hoped Tom wouldn't be seeing my clumsiness, because that would be another thing he could laugh about. I finally was stopped on a spot and the blindfold was loosened slightly, but not enough to be able to see anything. I smelt the lush smell of fresh bread, cooked chicken, steak and every other good food you could find. I could see why everyone went straight for the food, when your this hungry, stale bread sounds good.
------------
Finally the blindfolds were removed to reveal a beautiful assortment of food. I realised I was standing in a circle, a few hundred yards in between each person. I looked up as I heard my name.
"Hey Haley." A voice said above me. There was no other annoying phrase said to me other than that, of course it was Tom. Around us on higher up ground, were the ten vampires, spread out more than us. I had a feeling that Tom would just follow me as soon as the games started, but I would just have to find a way to loose him. There were only two ways to loose a vampire, through water, so they can't use your scent, or use the thing they crave against them, Blood.
-----------
I waited impatiently for the announcer to be over.
"Welcome to the Blood games....." The 'king' of the vampires said. The tension rose as the countdown began. "Ten....nine....eight...seven...." He spoke slowly. My heart started thumping quicker with all the tension, I felt almost dizzy but I had a plan to loose Tom. "Six....five....four.....three....two..." He said quicker. I peered behind where Tom was standing, to receive a cheeky wink from him, then I turned back where I had started. ".......ONE.....let the games commence!" He yelled loudly. I ran straight where Joey had told me not to go, I peered back to see Tom following me, no surprise there, but this was part of my plan. I dodged the vampires going for me and the humans trying to kill me with their weapons. When the first blood was drawn from a wound in a human, I peered back to see what I was expecting, Tom being distracted by the blood and changing his course to go for the blood. I took this as my chance to run, I ran where I was meant to go the first time, taking the surroundings in. I looked back to see an angry Tom, who had realised I'd tricked him and now he'd lost me. I ran for a tree climbing it as fast as I could, then hid up there.
-----------
I unzipped my rucksack, amazed at what was in there, a map of the arena, a key to a certain chest of valuable stuff to us, like food, I also found a small dagger, a tent, a flint striker to light a fire and a pen knife. I suddenly heard a branch snap and quickly turned round to see Joey sitting there.
"I was worried you'd forgotten what I'd told you when I saw you heading for the centre, smart plan by the way." He whispered.
"thanks." I smiled back at him.
"You know Haley, I kinda feel safe around you, like I could tell you any secret," he whispered. When your around a werewolf, you feel safe, so I knew why he felt safe.
"What do you mean?" I asked, wandering why he thought he could tell any secret to me.
"I've never told anyone about my history, but it just came out, it's my only secret." He sighed.
